Hello ppl,

As you all know lot of radical changes coming to f1 next season like kers, slicks, much needed downforce cut etc etc.

I was surprised there wasnt much discussion going on here about these.

Lot of things happening too,

latest being honda's departure from f1 and offer for standard cosworth engines for 2010 (manufacturers arent forced to use it tho).

There is a rumor about 4 race engines for 09.

I had hopes for honda in 09,they were really advanced in KERS afaik.

Unfortunately,No one will show their cards until the first gp.

So we will never know how the final car will look like until then.

KERS being PITA for half of constructors. Different balance for slicks (weight to front ).

What do you ppl reckon how its going to turn out :)

Its getting too toned down, the sport.

Why can't we have the good old V10s and electronics back? If they introduce standard engines, that's the end of F1. It'll just be a glorified A1 Grand Prix.

well..agreed about the toning down part...esp with std engines if introduced...
but on the other hand fia is tryin to bring back overtaking to the track than the pitlane...
id attended ferrari chief designer (ex) Rory Byrne's lecture in IITB an he'd given us a low-down on the canges for 2009 amongst other things...

he was a part of the group which studeid the physics of 1 car following another..
as of now, the faster car needs to be about 2 secs/lap faster than other to successfully overtake on track...
rory and his team are researching on how this time can be reduced.
there is a rule change in the design of front wing for 2009 which introduces a lift section in the middle of the wing..
how this helps is in normal driving - this lift section is detrimental as it reduces downforce; but when the car is following another, the amt of lift in the slipstream id lesser, and he gets an advantage...
by this, and possibly some other changes, for the 2009 cars, rory reckons that u just need to be 0.9 sec/lap faster to be able to overtake on track..
this is a great improvement, and hopefully we shouldsee some more overtaking next season!

he also said there may be a restriction on wind tunnels - teams will be asked to run only 1 wind tunnel 24x7 for testing - some teams are running 2 tunnels 24x7 now...

afaik the manufacturers wont be forced to use standard engine, they can use their own but will be regulated by secu.

Honda's departure may be a sign of things to come, specially in current economic climate.

Force India is not in great position either.

Toyota,i dont know, how much is their commitment to f1,considering many years and no wins even after gaining the reputation of being biggest spender.

Williams is not strong financially for some time now.

Maybe standard engine can help private teams (and perhaps new teams).

Also chance of more testing limitation even below 15k miles.

well agree that we need the v10 back and engine developments, but not electronics like TC,without TC F1 is more fun to watch.

How about V10 engined 850+ BHP cars without driver aids? That will absolutely kickass. Crashes and spins every lap. If it rains, it will be even more mindblowing.

I dont see that happening any time soon as this would mean the new chassis R&D spending for the teams to handle extra HP and to have a safe car on track.

The slicks is good thing that is coming this season. But honestly FIA shouldnt try to control too many things like wing design and stuff like that. If they want to cut costs, go ahead. put restrictions on funding or wind tunnel testings hours. But dont try to fiddle too much with the way car engineers go about designing their cars.

^ Yeah plus that would bring down safety greatly and can lead to life-threatening crashes, the last thing FIA would want.

My only point is, the F1 was as much a sport about technical development and superiority than pure racing itself and somehow the FIA seems to be undermining the tech aspects and focussing more on the racing.

I hope what their doing helps in making races more competitive but doesn't kill the "cutting-edge" technology and speed that F1 enjoys.

Ofcourse its gonna be interesting for viewers and drivers but overall it won't be "Cost Efficient" na ?

honda really need to find a buyer soon. they dont seem to have much time.

btw, whats with the standard transmission by xtrac and ricardo transmissions that all teams HAVE to use in 2010. that sucks.

Ferrari have launched their 2009 Formula1 challenger, in breaking with the tradition and naming it the F2009 Ferrari have named it the F60 to symbolise 60 years of participation in Formula1 Championships.

The car is designed to 2009 specifications and has been termed "CUTE" by Massa.

Rumors are rife that the F60 might not sport KERS to make the car reliable.

Meanwhile Max Mosely is considering not having KERS at all because KERS seems draining the pockets of the teams and is not going in with the idea of cost cutting.
