Technical Regulations - 2008
The FIA has officially revealed details of its plans to reform Formula One's Technical Regulations for the start of the 2008 season in a bid to reduce the costs of competing in the sport, whilst simultaneously attempting to increase competitiveness among teams. The proposed changes have been approved by the World Motor Sport Council and feedback on them is now being sought.
Major proposals include:

A single, control-spec Engine Control Unit (ECU) for all competitors, "manufactured by an FIA designated supplier to an agreed specification." This would make it possible to effectively enforce a ban on driver aids like traction control.

Standard gearboxes fitted with common parts for all cars - with control to be via a driver-operated clutch pedal and gearshift similar to those of a conventional manual-transmission road car.

Revised bodywork to reduce downforce by approximately 90 percent while allowing cars a wider track. This would allow cars to follow each other far closer through corners without the loss of aerodynamic grip and thus would be likely to increase opportunities for drivers to pass each other.

Tyres supplied by a single manufacturer to all teams, the reintroduction of slick tyres and larger wheels - plus a ban on tyre-heating devices.

A "minimum specified" centre-of-gravity for every Formula One chassis and improved impact testing, again to increase competitiveness, but also driver impact protection.

Standard brakes for all competitors to reduce development costs.

Greater control over which materials can be used for the construction of a car's bodywork - similar to changes controlling the use of "exotic" materials in engines that go into place in 2006.

The compulsory installation of a starter motor.

A ban on spare cars, with only spare chassis permitted at events.

A limit on testing to a maximum of 30,000km per team per year.

The right for a team to buy a complete car or any part of a car from another constructor, with "further discussion" over how this would effect the award of Constructors' Championship points.

Seems interesting..... will definitely make F1 more challenging but also very slow.... half of the excitement in F1 today is due to the fact that the cars go faaaar faster than any road car. But now, with all these restrcitions, that speciality will not be there.....

Why do they need the F1 car then. F3 is already there with really pathetic car speeds. Better we can watch the GTR races.

yep it surely sux..and big time at that
FIA has gone mad i suppose....

btw, all teams apart frm ferrari are trying to setup a new
rival GP championship from 2008. I hope that will have better rules than this.

LOL.. if all cars have the same engine, the same gearbox, the same tyres then it only makes sense that they take a driver, clone him.. makes for much more competitive racing and helps reduce the cost too u know. (once u clone, u need not pay the clones.. lol..)

On a side note
:

and since Narain doesnt get paid by Jordon (he makes money only thru the endorsements), it makes sense that they make his clones .. woot woot.. F1 in 2008 is the best thing to have happened for India!!! we'll see 20 Indians competing for the 'elite' championship.. woot woot..

Even ferrari did not want these technical specifications. THey have said that they will pull out of F1 if FIA reduces technical specifications and engine size.
I mean comeon. We already have formula BMW, Formula ASIA, Formula UK where same card run. Why the hell FIA is doing this. I am sure this is not gona happen. If no teams left to race whats FIA gona do?

The only thing i support here is slicks. They should be here now....

first the fia made rules for no tire chage during the race then now their thinking of reducing the dow force by 90%!!!!
by this f1s trp will also reduce by 90%
dont hope that fia will make restrictions on fule to reduce the cars speed

I agree with Sunny and Funky..... bring back slicks and turbochargers. If that happens, they should reduce the size of engines so that in the end the horsepower is not reduced.....

But other things are crap.

1980s.....BMW... 1500cc engine with turbo, 1350HP...imagine all hell breaks loose when the turo is fitted with thsee modern beasts :p
