two points from my side:

* change heart icon to a thumbs up icon

* also bring dislike option

and don't compare rep to this like feature guys. rep indicates the overall reputation and the likes are dependant on that particular post. they both have different purpose. I also think the like and dislike should be visible all the time.

^^ A little deviating from the topic, aren't we? I agree with your stand on the rep system. It does little good other than bloating the egos of some susceptible individuals. However, the "Likes" system is not the same. Whenever a member opens a thread, he can just reach the post with the most relevant answer to the original query. A convenience to get around junk and half baked information. However, the success of this feature ultimately depends on responsible community participation, which is what this trial period will help assess. And I hope the admins do not make a list that shows member with top likes, etc..

If the dislike button comes with a broken heart or something on the same lines of "dislike", that might add a little comical effect I think.

Dude the point of the like button is appreciation, be it because of the quality or amusement factor. I think its good.

According to me, adding a little bit of fun to a technology forum cannot be bad.

As far as misusing is concerned, maybe a new rule can be created where a person/noob is not allowed to like everything like a mad man.

Absolutely agree with you

They work differently. When a person clicks on like then the like count for that post increases. So when someone visits a thread then he can clicked on likes dropdown and go directly do the most liked post to get the info.

Rep system is different. Noone knows which is the most repped post of a particular thread.

This is a forum. If you look into thesauruses and dictionaries, you will find a strong enough relation between social, public and forum.

And if were a purely a Technology forum and not social in any way, we wouldn't have "The Lounge" as a sub forum now would we.

Rather than just throwing it out of the window, why not give it a genuine try..? The icon will definitely see a change, that I can assure.

I see a few members "liking" all posts. Your point is well taken guys. As mentioned by Safin already, this is just a trial run. There is no need to make your point again and again and again by liking anything and everything.

Likes button, Dislikes button, Thanks button, Reps button, Reply button, and the list goes on. Maybe in some time (maybe a few years) the bottom part will be full of rows of buttons to be clicked.

Could it be possible to hide the whole 'like this post; x, y & z have liked this post' part?

While there might valid reasons for having such a system in place, I'm sure there are others who agree with me in that it clutters up the page.

And talking of misuse- limit the no. of 'likes' per person per thread.
