I'm a fan of Fallout series. In fact I love the post-apocalyptic world, the desolateness of it etc. So here is a small and short (err not so short, 900+ words) pointer review to Fallout New Vegas.
Atmosphere - 5/5
One thing that Bethesda has done really right, is to getting the atmosphere of fallout desolate world really well. The dry grass everywhere, a very Nevada desert look, the empty dry wind flying across the face…very well done indeed.
Scale - 5/5
HUGE! Is the best way to describe almost any Bethesda game. I’ve played only a few since Oblivion and they are vast, easily sucking 100+ hours out!
Graphics – 3.5/5
Fallout NV is based on the same Gamebryo engine of Fallout 3 and Oblivion I believe. The engine works fine and smooth, even a low end machine can run the game respectively. However what worked in 2008 certainly doesn't work now. Bethesda hasn't done much to improve the look of FO NV. Why I don't know, perhaps the engine isn't all that great!
Facial features – 2.5/5
Bethesda is EXCEPTIONALLY good at making the ugliest female faces. FO3 was plagued with the ugliest females in wasteland, thank fully a little and I mean a little has been improved here. Like Sunny Smiles and Trudy in GoodSprings look pleasant. But does anyone get the feeling that most faces are so generic in FO series? Atleast make the important quest NPC different!
Animation – 2.5/5
Haha…this too has remained the same since the last FO 3. The same stiff animation, the awkwardness of it, etc.
Acting – 2/5
Oh GOD, this was my first complain and still is, the acting by the NPC’s is HORRIBLE! The voice acting is good but it just doesn’t connect well enough with what’s going on the screen. And there are still voice and lip sync problems. I remember in FO3, I told a NPC that her father’s dead and these are things he left behind; the voice showed emotion but the dumb ugly faced woman just had no emotion on her face. It completely draws one out of the game. TOTAL FAIL!
Inventory when dealing with sellers – 2/5
What the hell is wrong with Bethesda, the inventory by itself is fine with a well categorized view, but when wanting to sell something…MY GOD there is no categorization. I’ve too literally search the entire menu to sell a piece of what, some stupid Plunger which could easily have been added under the Misc list if categorized. RPG inventory is a big deal. Total FAIL!
Combat - 3.5/5
The combat is interesting especially with VATS but in its entirety, it isn't all that great. I mean when was the last time I played an FPS type game that had enemies running straight at me even though I'm shooting his FREAKIN FACE? Oh yeah back in like 1998. The enemies don't take cover, if they do no much and there is no real intelligent interaction to flush the player out!
Quests – 4/5
Quest are interesting and varies, so it’s fun. And there is an actual overall impact on the storyline and interactions. Sweet job Bethesda! However, since the game is so vast, it works against it when the 100th quest starts to show similar traits as the previous one.
So FO NV is just like a big expansion pack of FO3, there really aren’t changes that would’ve been nice to see. Some obvious and some not so obvious. Bethesda RPG’s are always such a mixed bag.
Here is my conclusion from my observation from playing RPG’s for years.
The best RPG’s I’ve played and relished have been from the Bioware. No I’m not a fanatic, I know when I see a good RPG. Bioware seems to get every on this list right which Bethesda doesn’t except that Bioware doesn’t make RPG as vast as Bethesda.
In my opinion (and strictly my opinion) I prefer quality over quantity and this has proved me in Oblivion and FO series. They are vast and the atmosphere is wonderful, however it gets tiring after all the combat and ooh and ahhs. When all the newness has died, all the flash and show has gone away from the mind, what is really left in the game to go on with? For me it’s simple…storyline, the delivery of the story, the acting, the emotional connect with NPC, etc take you far to the end. Proof of this? Dragon Age: Origins (again Bioware – damn I’m sounding like a Bioware fanatic here…lol)
DA:O had vastness, though not as vast as Bethesda. It has the most memorable characters you wanted around. Why?
1. They had personalities, they would talk, chat, have conversations with themselves and you
2. You could emotionally connect
3. They animations weren’t awkward
4. Voice as well as onscreen acting was good to excellent
5. They looked great, the women looked hot (Morrigan, Leliana)
So at the end of all this crap I’ve written, the bottom line is, Fallout New Vegas which deserves all the A grade and 9/10 ratings is “Like an A grade film which works like a B graderâ€. Which movie resembles this?…Resident Evil After Life (good action, well done generally but who wrote the crappy script and whats with the unjointed action), or like Predators – Well done overall, good action again, intriguing but no connect with characters and Who (Robert Rodriguez) the hell wrote the script this half crappy!
So I urge yu all to share your opinions and reviews about Fallout New Vegas, which is “Like an A grade film which works like a B graderâ€.
