I need a cheap and fast HDD for my desktop running Abit IP35E and windows 7 since my old HDD is giving me problems now. I was looking over at ebay for options but all I found there were USB drives or laptop drives. Capacity isn't an issue and I will settle for minimum possible one. Any suggestion guys? Will prefer an online deal since availability may be an issue here in Gwalior.

Seagate 7200.12 500GB HDD is fats and cheap.

The second choice is WD 500GB Blue HDD.

But,I have a doubt bout its reliability because my 500GB gone kaput in first 6 months.

And Seagtes RMA policy totally sucks.

My 500GB just came to me after 2nd visit from Accel service center.

Segate always give you a repaired HDD in exchange of your HDD and the repaired HDD will gone kaput in very few months of use.....:@

BTW,I have no experience with WD.

^ Even WD issues recertified/remanufactured drives. They are technically new. Just that they aren't legally allowed to be labelled as new.

RMA policy I guess varies with where you're located. I've usually received a Seagate RMA within 2~3 weeks. In contrast I just received a WD drive from RMA after 5 months.

An 80GB drive is the smallest you can find for about ~1.5k.

If you want something a little faster, pick up a 250GB drive. The single platter/higher density should help with performance. Should be about 2k.

yea seagate RMA here in mumbai is really good. have RMAed quite a few drives and the max wait was 15 days or so.

So,250GB is the highest capacity for a single platter HDD ?....

Actually no, the Seagate 7200.12 series has 500GB platters. Not sure about the WD drives.

My mistake, sorry about that.

Although I assume the lower capacity drives could be higher density platters that are short-stroked?

Found this cool site with everything on HDD platter sizes! : http://rml527.blogspot.com/2010/09/hdd-platter-capacity-database.html

Looks like my guess was right. The lower capacity drives are using 500GB platters which are short-stroked.

A Seagate 7200.12 160GB - ST3160318AS (or) ST3160316AS - is the smallest capacity drive with a 500GB platter.

A WD Blue 80GB - WD800AAJS-60M0A0/60M0A1 - is the smallest capacity with a 500GB platter.

I should add that there are 667/750GB platters, but only in the slower 'Green' series (except for the Barracuda XT 3TB).

Thanks for the reply guys. I have decided to purchase Seagate 7200.12 250GB drive from our own dealers paradise but I am confused which seller to choose? I tried Pming Rahul but his inbox is always full and he doesn't reply on yahoo messenger either. So which seller is best for this?

Price difference between 250 and 500 GB will be few hundred rupees, better to go for the larger capacity. Ive had good experiences with SMC and dvdstoredelhi. Had bought a WD black 500GB from dvdstore and 500GB 7200.12 from SMC.

Looks good. 500GB single platter, and a good price :)

Although yes as pratikb says I hope the seller packs it well. Most hard drive damage occurs during handling.
