Been using Azureus for a while on my headless ubuntu server.
Had been aon a Airtel 448 kbps connection so far so speeds were never something to be worried abt since my connection would be the bottleneck and not the efficiency of the client application

Now that I am on EVDO, I suspect 9but not sure) Transmission on OS X is giving me better download speeds than Azureus on Ubuntu

Would switching to Deluge / Tarnsmission/ any other client bring speed improvements?

Reason why I am asking this (instead of trying it out right away) is that my ubuntu server is a headless rig, and runs a bunch of other web apps apart from the azureus Web UI ..configuring the Web UI to be accessible via Apache through a proxypass is a PITA and I'll do it only if I know that switching to Deluge/transmission/rtorrent/xyz will bring improvements

transmission gives pretty good speeds..

i haven't come across any other client, that works better under linux.. atleast on my isp..

tried utorrent w/ wine.. there are some bugs.. but no noticable improvements in speed..

@SC, won't you have the old installation of b4rt active on your linux box. If yes, can't you try changing protocol to transmission and see the performance ?

wow, thanks for reminding me of that :)

utorrent is not for linux natively.

Deluge gives good speeds better than transmission.Azureus -old version was good.I tried in bridge mode only(with one tcp-udp port open)

Deluge seems to be banned on several pvt trackers unfortunately :(

Anyway, I figured out an easy way to handle and access multiple WebUIs on port 80 via proxypass so have installed both transmission and deluge

will try em out and see how it goes.

Wanted to try rtorrent too, but setting it up with a good web UI looks like a several hour long task

Dunno why but Transmission takes ages to download anything. I started downloading the 06/08 snapshot of Arch the other day and it downloaded a freakin 15MB in 10 hours of being connected to almost 25 seeds. I've resorted to using uTorrent now.

whats the advanntage Praka, a web UI is a lot more convenient to access...

A CLI means I need to SSH into the box everytime I have to add anything

I often add and queue torrents from work

KDE Users should definitely check out Ktorrent.I don't do much torrents now.But back in the days when I had UL plan, I used Ktorrent exclusively for downloading all distros, movies etc.
BTW, none of the torrent client will offer you good speeds unless you have forwarded your ports properly and told your client to use those ports. You can use firestarter/guarddog to forward ports.

Deluge I guess had used it sometime back clean and good interface and works with IPT like a charm.

What if you also have a router and yet u have firestarter.. where do u need to open the ports? Router or Firestarter or Both?

open the torrent client and in ports section-enter the below port no.

in bridge mode ,it is easy -open tcp ,udp ports -random one like 53464 .you can do it in ufw easy.even there is a gui for ufw - gufw :

What are you talking about?.. i guess u dint understand my question.. If you have RJ45 Cable coming 2 ur place, and say its a PPPOE connection, u put that in ur Router and create PPPOE on ur Router and then from teh Router u connect to ur PC. @ the sametime u also have installed Fire Starter on ur PC.. where will u open the Ports..

You need to open the ports just on the Router in that case. Firestarter doesnt play role in that. Just open the port no. on ur router and assign same port no. to ur torrent client. You can use the client like Deluge as well.. or if its too junked up with stuffs you can put ur system's Private IP in DMZ mode temporarily till ur dload gets over.. and then disable ur DMZ again..

Like on my Windows.. i have Nod32 Smart Security with its Firewall On. My utorrents creates problems if the port no. isnt opened... i opened a port no. on the Router i have and then it works fine after i assing same port no. to the client and also make sure that u remove the tic from the option Randomize Port nos.

What u've given works if ur router is configured in bridge mode where it wont be performning NAT and wont be blocking any ports.. so there may be ur system firewall will perform some werk...
