Forum Feedback Features and improvements wishlist for the market and feedback system

What's the difference between this guy and the guy who is selling Perplexity AI - why is that not part of Marketplace and this is, looking at the feedback stats he has sold over 10 Amazon Prime Codes in the last month itself.

I believe the Perplexity person is a dealer/reseller (which has a separate process etc. with TE involving showing ID proof to admins and I believe a fee of some sort also) and this person is a regular member.

EDIT to add that the retailer section is also a part of Marketplace, just a sub-forum; regular members have the User to User and resellers/dealers have their own section.

What features or improvements do you wish the market section and the market feedback system had?

Please pitch in based on your experiences. This will help give direction to the plug-in development for Discourse as any popular suggestions can be incorporated from day 1 or planned ahead.
As you said Market and not just "For Sale" listing, I shall proudly bring out my "let us bump WTB threads" petition again. No, seriously. That rule needs to be reverted.

I agree with the escrow suggestion.
And if I may add one suggestion from my side, an EMI option feature (terms can be arranged and negotiated)which must also be added/highlighted on the thread. This will help those of us who cannot cough up the entire amount at once but still would like to have them and not all of us credit cards or occupation to warrant one.

I've seen quite a few members being least bothered to leave feedback unless they are bugged to do so.
HAHA guilty. :D
I've dealt with a lot of members but couldn't care about the feedback as long as it's positive. If it's negative or didn't turn out like how I had hoped it to be then I'll create a thread and let that roll instead lol.

Sealed items should be allowed to be listed if the seller is ready to take responsibility for what's inside. Maybe we can do this after certain reputation score but there's a reason things sold as a mint condition have more value than open boxes.

For the upcoming migration to Discourse we are working on a brand-new feedback system designed specifically for our Marketplace section based on all the inputs received so far. In the first phase we are just looking at migrating to the new system before we start building some additional features that you all suggested.

So go through the following and feel free to thrown in your suggestions. Ignore the AI generated flowery language, have used it to structure the content better.

----

This new system aims to be more detailed, transparent, and better integrated into the forum experience, replacing the previous Positive/Negative/Neutral feedback system used on the old platform.

The new system moves away from a simple Positive/Negative/Neutral score to a more detailed 1-to-5 star rating across several key aspects of a transaction. This will help everyone better understand a member's reliability and conduct in the Marketplace.

How Will the New System Work?
  1. Buyer & Seller Roles:
    • Seller: The member who starts a new "For Sale" topic in a designated Marketplace category.
    • Buyer: Any member who posts a reply within that Seller's topic.
  2. Where Does it Work?
    • This feedback system will only be active in specific forum categories designated as "Marketplace Categories" (e.g., Market > For Sale). Feedback options won't appear in regular discussion threads.
  3. Leaving Feedback (The Core Change!):
    • Instead of just +/-/0, you'll rate members on a 1-star (Poor) to 5-star (Excellent) scale for specific criteria relevant to the transaction.
    • Buyers Rating Sellers:After interacting in a sale thread, Buyers will see a "Rate Seller" button (likely on the Seller's first post). Clicking this will let you rate the Seller on:
      • Communication (How responsive and clear were they?)
      • Shipping Timeliness (Did they ship promptly?)
      • Shipping and Packaging (Was the item packed well? Did it arrive safely?)
      • Overall Experience (Your overall satisfaction)
    • Sellers Rating Buyers:Sellers (topic starters) will see a "Rate Buyer" button (likely next to a Buyer's post). Clicking this will let you rate the Buyer on:
      • Payment Timeliness (Did they pay quickly?)
      • Communication (Were they clear and polite?)
      • Overall Experience (Your overall satisfaction)
    • Comments: You'll also have an optional field to add written comments to elaborate on your star ratings.
    • One Feedback Per Transaction: You can only leave feedback for a specific user once per sale topic (e.g., a buyer rates the seller once for that topic, the seller rates that buyer once for that topic).
  4. Editing Feedback:
    • Made a mistake? You'll have a short window (likely 24 hours) after submitting feedback to edit your star ratings or comments. After that, the feedback is locked.
Where Will You See These Ratings?

Transparency is key! Ratings will be visible in several places:
  1. User Cards: When you hover over or click a username, the small popup card will show a quick summary:
    • [Shop Icon] Seller Rating: Average Star Score (Total Seller Ratings) - e.g., 4.5 (10)
    • [Wallet Icon] Buyer Rating: Average Star Score (Total Buyer Ratings) - e.g., 4.9 (5)
    • (If a user has no ratings yet, it will show 0.0 (0))
  2. User Profiles (New "Market Rating" Tab!):
    • A dedicated "Market Rating" tab will be added to every user's profile page.
    • Here you'll find:
      • Overall Averages: Their average Seller and Buyer scores (and counts).
      • Detailed Averages: Average scores broken down per dimension (e.g., Average Seller Communication: 4.2 stars).
      • Full Feedback History: A list of all individual feedback entries received (both as buyer and seller), showing who left it, when, the star ratings given for each dimension, any comments, and a link back to the original sale topic.
      • Filtering/Sorting: Options to view feedback received as a seller, as a buyer, or sort by date.
  3. In Marketplace Topics:
    • When viewing a topic in a designated Marketplace Category, the Seller's (topic starter's) current Seller and Buyer ratings (average score and count) will be displayed prominently near the top of the topic.
  4. Profile Summary Page:
    • On the main "Summary" section of a user's profile (where you see Likes Received, Topics Created, etc.), their Seller Rating and Buyer Rating summaries will also be listed.
What About Old Feedback?
Don't worry, your hard-earned feedback history won't be lost! We plan to migrate the feedback from the old XenForo system. Because the systems are different, we'll convert the old ratings like this (proposed):
  • Positive feedback -> Becomes a 5-star rating across the relevant new dimensions.
  • Neutral feedback -> Becomes a 3-star rating across the relevant new dimensions.
  • Negative feedback -> Becomes a 1-star rating across the relevant new dimensions.
  • The original comments will be preserved.
This conversion allows us to bring your history into the new system's format.

We Want Your Feedback on This New System!
This new system is designed for you, the TechEnclave community. Before we proceed further, we'd love to hear your thoughts:
  • Does the 1-5 star system with specific dimensions make sense?
  • Are the rating criteria clear for buyers and sellers?
  • Does the display of ratings on profiles, user cards, and topics seem useful?
  • Do you have any suggestions for improving the usability of leaving or viewing feedback?
  • Any concerns about the proposed migration of old feedback?
Please share your feedback, questions, and suggestions. Your input is crucial in making this the best possible system for our Marketplace.

I feel that people who want to keep a clean 100% positive ratings will open a number of threads to raise complaints lol.

Everything seems great. And thank you for your hard work on thinking this through and also accepting community feedback.

One Feedback Per Transaction: You can only leave feedback for a specific user once per sale topic (e.g., a buyer rates the seller once for that topic, the seller rates that buyer once for that topic).
Just this one thing is a bit complicated now I think, with posts like this where people are offering an ongoing service rather than a product. Limiting feedback to one per sale thread may affect feedback ratings as people may (and I believe some already have) make multiple orders. Under this system, the only option is to open multiple For Sale threads, which will obviously just result in spamming the whole Marketplace section.

I think allowing one feedback per transaction is fair for everyone. If I regularly buy or sell from the same person, I don’t think it’s necessary to leave feedback every single time. One review is enough to show that I’ve participated in the marketplace and to reflect that interaction.

Feedback ratings aren’t like game achievements where having more is always better. They’re meant to build trust in the community, so what really matters is accuracy, not quantity. If people could leave feedback multiple times for the same thread and the seller, it could skew the overall ratings and make them less reliable.

Phase 1 seems good. Thanks for clearing it out and taking in community feedback. Looking forward to it.

What does Phase 2 include from the above suggestions? Asking, cause as I was typing I realised we already discussed some of the topics previously and had to re-read Page 1 to refresh my memory. It would be good to have a summary of Phase 2 just like this one, so the further discussion does not become repetitive.

I don't know this makes sense but what if TE acts as intermediary for buying and selling in marketplace like when a member wants to buy a product he transfers money to TE account and when buyer receives and tests product and everything is genuine then TE pays the amount to seller; if buyer receives faulty product he gets refund when seller receives back the item

I know this seems complicated but this reduces most scams

And TE can get some fee for handling the process

Well the good news is, Phase 1 is developed and ready to use. Migration related testing is pending.

Phase 2 is under requirement detailing and may or may not be there from day 1. It entails filtering based on price, location, category.

Phase 3 is for future and will be done much later. Considering optional Aadhaar and bank verification. No personally identifiable data will get stored, just the verification status and maybe last 4 digits for cross referencing. The name on Aadhaar and bank should match, that kinda thing.

This has been suggested multiple times, clearly there is a need. You are talking about escrow, which is a big headache and has lots of regulations around it. Maybe someday but not in the near future.

You may want to consider other forms of ID or VID, if it's Aadhar.

In fact to continue that thought further, we can even show how many unique users has the person had sale interaction with.

Lets say my rating is: Seller 4.8(10) Buyer 4.9(15), but my Unique Users is only 1.

So its clear I have done fraud to boost my ratings. So the more number of users you have exchanged ratings with, the more reliable you should be.

As others have noted in previous comments, there are many sale threads that offer an ongoing service, and the new feedback system on that might be difficult.

A good solution could be having anyone who buys a reseller subscription granted a 'services section' on their profile. Could act like a splash page for the services they currently offer (Like other service marketplaces, see fiverr) and users can book services from there completely bypassing the marketplace section which in my opinion should be for the sale of physical items and at the most, one-time coupons or vouchers.

I agree that a dedicated services section would be a good addition. We have quite a few members offering 3D printing, mice/kbd repair, cables, international shipping in a non-professional capacity. But they get lost in the myriad bumps of the normal Marketplace threads.
