I had downloaded the ATi drivers ver 9.7 for my HD4850 long time back but installed today only. As suspected, after reboot, my screen started showing no signal message. How to fix it? Boot screen or the GRUB menu shows no recovery option like in Ubuntu.

Don't know about the rest of your problems, but if you want to enter single user mode, just highlight the relevant boot entry, hit 'e' to edit, then go to the line that starts with 'kernel' and add the boot parameter 'single' at the end. Press Enter and then press 'b' to boot.
