Cebit 2010: Nvidia gives advice on patience

As you might have already heard, Fermi is present on Cebit, although physically seeing it here is relatively difficult for the general public. Nvidia has equipped some rigs with its latest graphics card and put some unscrupulous people in charge of guarding them, so now the outfit is giving advice on patience.

However, Nvidia's secretive policies could potentially backfire. A lot of sites are carrying baseless rumours and half-truths about the upcoming card. It is not easy to blame them, as people are hungry for Fermi news, and since Nvidia is not catering to their needs, they are turning to the rumour mill. It is a bit odd that Nvidia would miss out on an opportunity to utilize mass Cebit coverage to its advantage, thus generating even more rumors, mainly negative ones.

The people who traveled far and wide to attend Europe's biggest tech trade show would have appreciated at least a few tidbits of information, a few photos or live samples. As journalists are managing to get the info, visitors are more likely to learn something about Fermi online than on the show itself and this just isn't right.

"Hold on to your seats is" what Nvidia advises users, although we’re sick and tired of holding our seats and would rather hold an actual GTX 480s in our hands. I mean, look what holding on to his seat did to this poor guy.

^ Seriously, its time they come up with something.

^phermi is phail. Ati has already stolen the market. Noone should be waiting for fermi, they haven't even released a single true image of the card, just stupid marketing all the way.

I was at IGDS, Bangalore.. nvidia said they'll be coming out with the so called GF100 series soon.. they did demo a few videos of what the card was capable off.. was freaking mind blowing, especially the tesselation videos.. they even showed the fermi architecture..
The hinted at cards based on fermi architecture being release somewhere before/around Q3 this year..

What Nvidia is not getting that all this secrecy is giving way to negative publicity

Now i am beginning to think whether Nvidia will even release it in q1 2010 . Maybe they may even release it in q2 2010 or even q3 2010 .

If what we hear about Fermi is true then why is Nvidia trying to hide its cards. Nvidia never shyed away from insulting ATI so why now ?

Coz they still don't have the card ready yet . That's why

Okay, finally some real pics -- apart from blurred images which consisted off:

1. A PCB on a shrink wrap on a bed in a room.

2. A fat guy (with an expression "ooh it hurts take it out") sitting next to a computer cabinet with a transparent side panel, showing the a$$ of some GPU.

3. Underside of PCB plates, which resembled GPUs.

Even the late princess Diana was not as shy as this Fermi. What a groan festival. Seriously....!

^Did you know her personally to know she was shy, or just freakin shooting your trap off? Meaningful comments, not BS you dreamed of err probably creamed off. If true, I'll take you seriously :P

Nicely spotted Muzux2, I wonder if it may be some pre release taiwanese edition. We all know how they spell :P
I thought these were to be 1 GB cards, wasn't that the whole point of going GDDR5 - greater bandwidth, a substitute for frame buffer in the short run, while keeping the price lower as well. On second thought - with a 384-bit bus, who'll bother...

I interacted with a couple of NV folk who assured me to keep place in my cabinet for a GF100. Having a GTX 285 means I can hold out for a DX11 card, but it better be something after all the delays. And the price better be right too, or I'll go ATi again, though I hate their driver issues, which I why I went NV in the first place...

SabrePC.com - Nvidia Geforce GTX 470 GDDR5 1GB PCI-Express 2.0

hah...1 GB GDDR5, no image...

This image, why have a cut out in the PCB - not good for streamlined airflow, could be a false image...

No, was not shooting my trap off. You are spreading the poo, with the above comment. Take that last 'tongue smiley' off that comment, will make it look better. Not sure where the comparison of 'cream', came into this thread.

Your avatar says it all, which is why I wondered about a reference to Diana. Anytime you need an English lesson, ask puttar...

Dadu....

If you cannot understand or misunderstood the euphemism/sarcasm/mockery/joke that is being depicted via that avatar -- let me know, can PM you the details. Thanks for offering the English language tutelage, but no thanks.

^^ looks like you were away from all fermi news for a while :P

The sabrepc details are simply incorrect, thats proven. They are just trying to make quick buck with early preorders.

There wont be 1GB Fermi at launch.

The 470 will be 320bit and 480 will be 384bit.

This boils down to the architecture (ROP / Memory ratio) that Nvidia choose. Its 64bit per ROP group.

480 will have 48 ROPs (6 groups of 8) and hence 384bit memory interface with 12 chips.

470 will have 40 ROPs (5 groups of 8) and hence 320bit memory interface with 10 chips.

Down the line expect lower end mainstream cards with 32 ROPs and 256bit memory with 1GB RAM, but not now.

So thats why these odd memory sizes, the two launch cards simply cant have 1GB memory.
