Hi guys,
I'm a Nescafe instant and tea drinker for my entire life. After reading about the true coffee taste that you never get in Nescafe (or any instant) - I'm thinking of switching to filter coffee.

I read that freshly ground coffee beans gives the best flavour. As I'm in Kolkata, I doubt I will get some good quality coffee beans here. So I'm thinking of buying some coffee powders from Cafe Coffee Day and also a coffee maker like this:

eBay India: SUNFLAME - Coffee Maker SF-701 (item 280534167967 end time 12-Aug-2010 19:38:39 IST)

I don't like chickory mixed ones. So is this a good choice?

get a percolator, and arabica coffee beans :)

yes, the coffee in the link is ok.

AFAIK , small percolators are available in CCD as well.

I dont know too many coffee sources in India, but look for a south indian coffee shop which sells freshly ground coffee.

^^ Actually the bengalis are more of a tea drinker. When it comes to coffee - it's mostly the instant variety. So, as there is not so much demand - I doubt whether I could get some good beans here.

Ahh, i did not know that, I would consider myself a majority tea-drinker as well. My favourite is what is known as 'Assam 3 mix', which is Assam dust, orange Pecot & Mamri. I always tell the tea guy to leave out the mamri because it dilutes the kick. I like it strong and with a good complexion with little milk. Awesome stuff :ohyeah:

On ocassion i'll go to a Dakshini restaurant here for a small coffee, comes to Rs.5-10 and it beats the pants off a Barrista or coffee day i think. Now what these places do is filter coffee, you need to put it in a percolator and let it drip over night. This way the coffee comes out very good but it takes patience and you can't have it on demand, need to do the preparation first, for the price its much easier to just have it at a restaurant.

I remember a cousin of mine showing me his percolator once, heh, he had a stovetop italian expresso maker and used it in reverse :O

Normally you fill the bottom with water, then put the filter on and fill it with coffee grounds and then screw the jug ontop, then you put it on the stove and the steam from the bottom goes to the top and makes a very strong coffee.

This guy was filling the top with water and letting it percolate down overnight and using that in his coffee in the morning (!)

Instant caught on because of the convenince but the quality is no where the same. I think at the time the craze was more for the difference and the foreign aspect than the actual taste.

Cannot believe there is no india coffee board outlet in Kolkatta ?

If you buy it at the cafe's you mentioned it will be more expensive.

I use that percolator, works great! We get our coffee freshly ground from a place called kumardhara in pune. A mixture of 90% Peaberry coffee + 10% chicory.
i've tried out all the ccd blends, not too impressive. Perfect was the only one which i liked

i have an expresso machine too, with the frothing attachments and all, but finding a coffee bean grinder is tough, not there in retail channels mostly.

@blr_p

I missed that post. sorry.

So which is better - the stove top percolator or the electric one. Which one extracts the flavor most?

This 'best' question is difficult to answer as it depends on your preferences.

Initially you asked about filter coffee, for that we get those cylindrical containers here. But you have to be patient while it drips. Not an instant fix but the result is very good. This is what you get in the local restaurants here.

The stove top is for making expresso not filter coffee, and is much stronger than filter coffee which is mixed with two thirds milk already. Once you get used to expresso everything else will be seem too weak. I don't mind one once in a way but its not a habit with me.

In your linked thread Sam talks about a French press which is quite easy, once you've ground your beans. For regular use this seems much more practical and the results will defnitely be better than any instant coffee out there regardless of the price. I'm going to hunt for a French press next time i go to the market and would be interested in trying this out.

The electric ones are more pricey but get the job done. If you don't have a stove and cannot boil anything then thats what you want but will be little weaker than the French press.

There is a difference in the grind between the traditional filter method and the electric ones and they are not to be interchanged.

I searched the local market today. Except CCD coffee powders, Coorg 100% pure (Tata coffee) and Kothas (85% coffee 15% chickory mix) is available. I didn't have time to go to Indian coffee house.

Is Coorg a good one?
