Final Year Project (FYP)

X-Caliber

Recruit
Yesterday I saw the end of my Sem VI.. Pretty good it was. May be the smiles were due to the fact paper was good, or may be due to other factor.

But sooner as today's sun died, I found another tension mounting on my head.

1) Companies approaching, and as I'm eligible in all(their condition met) so chance to get placed.

2) Filled with emptiness and way things are changing quickly...

But no it was not this all, the fear was of Final Year Project

PROJECTPHOBIA :O

Again after dragging all meaningless thoughts out from me...

I want you guys to help me decide the topic

================Some Info=================

My Field - EXTC / ECE

Aim - Wireless based technology (Other suggestion are welcomed too)

Project Type - Mostly opting for Outhouse, but If no alternatives are left then Inhouse will do

=======================================

Hmmm... Greenie pour ur suggestions pleege; :D

May I suggest simulation of Wimax using MATLAB [simulink]???

Errrm my major was mech so dont ask me much; :ashamed:

my final year project meant the world to me , and you have no idea how much i spent on it. In the end , it didnt matter , not to the examiners, not to my recruiters ( sadly all of them IT - a few flunked papers n earlier sems = no chance of appearing for core companies :(, even when i knew more EC than a lot of my lecturers :p), and not in my future. I would suggest you give it some thought before you give it your all. Of course , there will always be that sense of accomplishment , but is it really worth it ?

Either way, I'd recommend you giving it too much thought only if you're planning to get into a core company ( and i mean you're serious about it , not just a preference), else outsource it , and bullshit(the correct word in malayalam is "thallu" - rough translation - make a long and verbose and somewhat plausible reply) your way through the viva that should be enough, since the examiner doesn't know your circuit by heart anyway. you'll need a lot of BS skills to survive in the IT industry :p

Errr I guess placements take place during the start of the 6th sem so the recruiters would be just inquisitive enough to know the project u've decided upon [at least that was the case with me];

So irrespective of the project chosen, the company should find that the student knows the base of the subject thoroughly and not just a vague idea of what he intend to accomplish by doing the project; :)

And for majors like ECE, EEE, EIE & Mech, I've always felt a Core company is far better than an IT company; [personal opinion; flames welcome at this :p];

Yeah same here gannu,

Infact for ECE .. TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) are coming this 27th in our college and I'm looking forward for them.

So if I plan a project that would anyhow interest them then i sure have my way rather than highway.

@gannu,

Wimax using mathlab appears good. But the thing is I've no clear idea on Mathlab yet? and would it really fancy the core companies ?

agreed...
if u want IT...why opt for extc/mech etc in the first place...

btw...for us this time..placements are starting in july...i.e. after 6th sem papers...
personally im not plannin to get a job now...lookinat higher studies...

as for the project...mines already decided...an its probably one of the most flamboyant project y'all would ever hav heard of...

mech dept of our coll is making a racing car for Formula SAE...
me and my group are supposed to handle the electronics part of it...
eg ecu,tiptronic 'paddle' shift,data logging/telemetry,steering wheel hud/controls......the list goes on and on...

@topic starter...
id come across this device on the www...
its a line of sight communication technique using light(IR/laser) and lenses.
each 'device' is a transreceiver
digital data is sent and at receiver use sum light sensitive element...
apparantly..if u do ur alignment etc correctly u can get sum awesome range...
u can think on the same lines...(i.e. if greenie's conditions are satisfied!)

VHDL is a big draw. it will help you clear a few interviews too, if you plan to get into a semiconductor co. if you can, try something in that

Because , unfortunately not all of us can make that choice- of course, or career....

TCS is an IT company aint??? :p

[Coding in front of a PC basically;]

Look for L&T [not L&T Infotech!!! micro-controllers, fuzzy logic n such apps], nVidia & ATI [a rare entry to ur college; depends], Major phone manufacturers like Nokia, Motorola, Seimens [yeah Benq-Seimens whatever!! :p], Netlogic Microsys, Freescale semiconductors, Apache etc.

And btw its MATLAB; More here:

The MathWorks - MATLAB and Simulink for Technical Computing

And abt Simulink here:

Simulink - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simulink - Simulation and Model-Based Design

agreed...

Dude!! Personal opinion; I can certainly have my say cant I?? :p

I opted for Mech cos I luvd it; and not many ppl're like that; They opt it cos its perhaps the only choice they're left with!!!

Thats exactly the reason I ended up failing in the C++ final paper [in the 2nd sem although I cleared it with a C grade in the supplementary test] but without hesitation let me say I got a job in the best core company [my college has witnessed so far; L&T for that matter] and getting a 8.32 CGPA overall [Just got my final mark-lists today!!! Picked it up from the college :D];

@ greenhorn
well...that would be like going into damage control mode after a wrong choice...
never advisable to allow that to happen...
but lets not digress...

I am in same boat , yesterday was last sixth sem exams :D . I am in IT branch though so lot of options open for project . Any suggestions for me ? :)

Hmmm, like designing some unique search engines with some special algorithms???

My collg IT ppl challenged Google with a unique algorithm they'd created and was selected to the Google academy [Hyderabad I presume??] only to be proved later it was wrong in certain aspects; But they truly deserved the credit;

Sadly...Chances of core companies coming to our college is 1/100

Currently 2 companies which are coming are TCS and Accenture

But question is not that..

I need more.. suggestion regarding F Y P

how abt a captcha solving algo that works for cat-pic-share!
many here would luv it!

I will stay away from that one else people will have to really solve riemann's hypothesis next time they want to downlod anything from rapidshare . Cat's and dogs are still better :D

just outsource it re, go to one of those guys who do that , they'll give you a list of things they can do. after checking with the other groups in your college , choose one, and forget about it until the week of the viva.

Use that time to prepare for CAT / cut class and chill, maybe learn java /dotnet , sor some programming language to give you a head start at whichever IT job you get, and enjoy final year. Its the last fun you're going to have in a long , LONG time , and I'm saying this out of experience....

Yes your words do sound legitimate

Need to search for the guys who do those... anyone from Mumbai ?

DISCLAIMER: above advice is only if you're sure you want an IT job and not core , because by doing this you will reduce your chances of getting into a core company significantly.

You have to understand the importance of the process of deciding a project problem. If you are interested in wireless then do some research before you ask others. I had spent a lot of time in deciding my project problem. Refer to ACM/AIEEE for existing work done on wireless technology. Read a few papers and then if something strikes you, work on it. Trust me, by this process you would come up with an excellent project worth publication. Spend a lot of time on the problem statement of the project, make sure its unique. You wont regret it.

I know a few of them selling projects . There is tanishka classes at nerul station in navi mumbai who have a big board outside specifying something about final year projects :p
