Final Year Project (FYP)

I'd say put in the max effort you can into the final year project.Bosch recruited from quite a few colleges in coimbatore recently (4Th year students) and when i asked my senior what they asked him, he said it was more like a presentation of his final year project than anything else. And he got through.

and pappu, welcome to the mech gang :p me going to thrid year now :D

Bah; pappu 3rd yr pass ho gaya!!

Myself completed the grad; :)

Gona start working for L&T HED [Heavy Engineering Division] at the Design & Analysis wing; Posting at Hazira, Surat after the 35 day orientation course from Mysore; :)

I dont really see the point in outsourcing a project. Its like as if you guys are saying that if the companies are not interested in your project, then whats the purpose of doing it.

The purpose of the final sem project is to see how well you can put the knowledge and skills you aquired to use and to get the experience of working on some thing of considerable size. You are not doing it only so that the companies will take notice during the recruitment process. Regardless of whether the recruiters are taking notice, the experience of doing a project on your own gives you confidence and a sense of accomplishment and it does come handy when you are acutally working at companies.

Outsourcing a project is like admiting that you are not capable of doing something on your own.

For your own good, I strongly suggest that you select and do a project on your own. Just becasue your are in EC does not mean you have to build up some complicated circuit to impress the recuiters. If are good with programming you can cook up some simulation projects. Skills in Matlab will also come handy if you want to join core companies as many use Matlab for simulations. A project in Verilog HDL or VHDL might also be good if are interested in that. Just think up some idea for an ASIC and try to implement and simulate it.

^^^The master has spoken I guess; :)

My ideas have been reflected through his posts; :)

And I did enjoy my 4th yr life without stressing it out on the project part either; :D

I'm saying exactly that. Heck towards my last sem , i just mugged up my telecom papers ( which i actually hate doing) , because it was no longer relevant to what i was going to end up doing.(IT job)

Quite true. We have 2 projects in our syllabus. the first one(3rd year) was good , but the second(final year) was was better , but no one noticed, and it really didnt help me, and I was frustrated by the sheer futility of the whole affair. I mean , Yes, there is a strong sense of accomplishment, but It really didnt give me anything. Whatever I had to prove , I had already proved the first time....

What I've also recommended in case he's seriously looking for core job. For an IT job, it really doesnt matter, really. I just BS'd my way through my interview. 0utflowsys interviews are all pure HR interviews, and no, the question of the project didnt come up, not for me , not for anyone else

lol i chose my project based on the fact that it is not going to start until the final semister because the stupid prof got money to make a test rig and getting parts will take 4-5months :)

well for me... working in a IT firm is just a means to get cash.... loved h/w , electronic and mech... spent most my time in college building robots and what not.... FYP something which i thought would be simple for me and complex for others... tht way i had to spend less effort on it and still enjoy....

i have seen guys pouring thr heart out on a project and guys just lazily making some crap in the end and getting much better grades....

So chose something which appears complex and is simple to complete.... Always take something which you can actually chew....

Don't take a topic from latest IEEE journal and go for it....
Go for a some topic from very old maybe 10 years and go for it... u will get the material and h/w easily....

PS: Best place to look for topics
IEEE - the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology

Well, IMO, it depends on wat u wanna do once u pass out...core work or IT :ashamed:

Our 4th year decision was simple. We were EnTC ppl who realised since 2nd yr that we were interested in computers rather than core electronics, so we made sure we did something in our project that involved programming/learning.

We managed to get a project from Siemens for a face detection system (video). Implementation was left to us by the guide who expected us to use C/,matlab etc.

What we ended up doing was implementing it in Java :p using a webcam and all....got around 130/150 (not the best marks, those were for the fav students :p), but ended up getting awarded for best project in the branch  I would rather have gotten the marks

+ we learnt something.....:ashamed: tho most of it was implemented by one of our project mates who ended up becoming a java guru advising comp-sci ppl by the end of it :D

Either way, I'd recommend you giving it too much thought only if you're planning to get into a core company ( and i mean you're serious about it , not just a preference), else outsource it , and bullshit(the correct word in malayalam is "thallu" - rough translation - make a long and verbose and somewhat plausible reply) your way through the viva that should be enough, since the examiner doesn't know your circuit by heart anyway. you'll need a lot of BS skills to survive in the IT industry :p

Let me guess ,going by your comments ,you must be working in Infosys. :p

@X-caliber

Choose your project based on the type of job you would want do.Although ,it does not neccessarily mean that you will be offered similar kind of job,it does brighten your chances.

Project Ideas : -

If you are looking at

VLSI (companies like Toshiba,freescale,Wipro,open silicon,inferia ,intel )

chip design project using languages like VHDL .Tools like magic. etc.

Communication(Companies like siemens ,Intel,Broadcom,CISCO,Alcatel)

Build stacks for

protocols like SIP,MGCP.

DSP based Projects (some codec implementations using DSP ).
Embebded

driver implementation .

If you interested in Wireless, then may be you can implement a "Wifi connectivity client using NDIS".

Its been long time since I'd last track of this thread. Nevertheless I respect the contributors.

Well the updated news is, I'd been placed by TCS (Tata Consultancy services) in the recent placement campus which took place.

But the fact is I still want to do a wireless based project.

I recently got my self stabilized on RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) topic.

I plan to work on Security Tags which can be monitored when they are under the area of work...

More help in this regard will be welcomed..

also Since this one is not yet finalised.... you can still suggest many more

Thanks sandy453
