SanDisk issued a firmware fix for a variety of drives in late May, shortly after our story.

The drives would still be shipped with the vulnerable firmware versions, unless it is a manufactured recently. Requires users to be aware of it and to install the WD/SanDisk software that most wouldn't be aware of.

A good company would have recalled the products, updated the firmware and then shipped them, but the WD of now is only penny-focussed.

Drives were still dying after the firmware fix. Not to mention, WD and SanDisk's response to the whole thing was extremely poor.
