after one and a half days worth of struggling with packages and what not, me , a linux noob of two weeks vintage got a 3d accelerated desktop running on my onboard geforce 4MX!

YouTube - XGL/COMPIZ

I got beryl running, and its not very different from compiz. compiz i had a bit of trouble due to conflicting package versions . dont ask me why

there is a lot more to this than wobbly windows.. the whole interface seems so slick, so alive.. its incredible!

If you can get this for free, who wants vista :bleh:

I know this aint exactly hardware... but it is showoff:hap2:

clarification: that isnt my desktop... just to give you an idea of what i can do now ;)

you dont need much... at least not as much as vista wants to get this up and running.. I got all the effects on my 4 MX and athlon XP without much load. the rain water effects need a card with a pixel shader tho :(

Have to say.. Vista is nothing in front it. It is superb.

BUt Cant run linux just for the eye candy. :P

but the candy is very useful to dangle on front of pple who have been thinking about trying out linux. I've got two converts already. people with graphics card are VERY prone to wanting this :D. i'm not running this purely for the eye candy.. now my system is almost fully on linux except when i want to watch tv(anyone got a pinnacle PCtv working on ubuntu?) and when the parents want the PC !

and i know enough people who want to switch to vista just for the aero interface!

I'd got XGL running, but only got the wobbly windows. How to enable the other stuff like the cube and all?

try dragging a window offscreen(to the side), or if you are using beryl, CTRL ALT Right or left arrow :D

and you GOTTA try ALT-TAB!

the rain needs shaders :(

Canu list the steps and packages u installed.

I have redhat as my linux os.

Whats all Linux distros are XGL ready

Me looking for the same thing, btw the video does look great.

pple with ATI cards should know they are in for a rocky ride.. ATI linux drivers are generally more buggy. a friend of mine got xgl|Beryl running, but had problems with his shutdown on his onboard X200

Seeing everyone getting latest hardware stuff was kinda boring.....THIS is a refreshing change....:cool2:
Great work greenhorn.....That desktop pwns Vista....that too for free...
Too bad....working with linux is still a PITA for a noob like me...:ashamed:

ADIPOLI DESKTOP!!!!

dude DuBudhi... Ubuntu= Linux for noobs :hap2:There's help for ubuntu users everywhere!.

I'd been wanting to switch to linux for quite some time... but RH/SuSE seemed too :S ... but ubuntu... was a piece of cake ! you ought to give it a try sometime ... at least the live CD :)

OH in that case, all the best for your upgrade :hap2: I'm gonna be stuck without shaders for quite some time :( >btw, the I dint make the video:ashamed: someone else did... but my pc can do the same stuff except for the ripples( shaders :@)

Hint: if you are planning to go linux, get something Nvidia. ATI linux drivers are a PITA

Ya i know that Nvidia has better support in GNU/Linux. BTW i have been using GNU/Linux for about 4-5 years now, so i am not planning to go linux, i am already into linux.
I have also written some articles for the LinuxForYou magazine.

P.S: I have repped u for this thread.
