I want to format my c drive which has vista os in it but now it does not seem to work.. i want to know how can i format the drive so that i install a new os ie windows 7...

Boot in the Windows 7 disc and start the installation. When you get to the part where to install Windows 7, you can add/delete/format partitions from installation itself.

^that or if you are really unsure or want to do things in a different way something, then use GParted.

Install the software into USB and boot and format :)

You can't format a partition that's currently in use ... boot from the win7 dvd and you'll get a option to format it during installation :)

thks guys.. just dloading windows7 now... so ll do the needfull & let u know if it works...

Problem solved.. 100% working & yes windows 7 did ask me for the partition.. cool feature...

If you had to download an ISO, wouldn't downloading a linux distro be easier? Most allow you to format in NTFS and FAT (iirc).

There used to be tools that I saw people use 5 odd years ago on boot floppies. Of course, floppies are now dead but aren't there any which come on a CD?

I simply use a Windows/Linux disc when I need to format the drive in use (because its always followed by an OS install for me). For drives not in use, you can use Windows. For partition movements (hopefully with empty partitions), I suggest Acronis Disk Director (for Windows only). :) I think it can move free space around as well but I've never really tried that. And it even detects disks/drives which are formatted to non-Windows compatible filesystems (ext2/3 for example) so if you're removing Linux and coming back to Windows, this will do the job for you :)

(Excessive? Just thought I should post some related info in case someone ever reads this in the future via a search engine :P)
