Whenever i remove the audio cable from my speakers and connect it again my pc hangs.
Further whenever i am working, from nowhere my screen goes blank, the monitor led just blinks, the cpu is still on and after a minute my whole pc restarts.
Now when i restarted, and handled the mouse, the pointer just moved in a vertical straight line nomatter whatever i did.
Then my whole screen went to bizarre colours the whole screen was corrupt, i cant describe it,but it was worse.
When i restarted again the hdd led was contant red, screen was blank.
After a restart again it came back to normal. But sometimes again i have such probs.
Can anyone figure whats wrong.
I am working on win xp pro.

Hi deejay i have checked my earthing,it is fine.
But my pc just keeps on hanging sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes after 5 hours.
Everything including mouse freezes,i just have to reset it again, but the same prob after few hours.
Once i started my pc,it went straight 10 hrs without any probs, then i started a game after few minutes,my pc hanged, screen went corrupt and the sound went in a loop.
Sometimes when i power on my pc,my screen is blank and the hdd led is contantly red.
It also hangs while in safe mode.Sometimes even in bios it hangs.
Can anybody plz help me?

Take apart your case, the m/b, gfx card, RAMs ,proccy, etc and clean them with brushes of various sizes and wash the case and dry it. Take care to not wet the PSU. Re-assemble and see if the problem occurs again. ;)

^^ I wouldn't recommend "washing" your case ;) . A slightly damp cloth would be good enough, but try to keep moisture/water out of your case as much as possible.

also get ur PSU checked...clean the cabinet and figure out if the same problem occurs when u remove individual components(like sound card,PCI cards etc) and run the PC.

ok i have tested my pc for abt 2 weeks.
Here is what happened:-
When i had all the components connected, there were hangs and lockups.
When i tested my audigy 2zs with rmaa the frequency respose waveform was
was oscillatory instead of flat.
I removed my gfx card.
My pc ran flawless for 10 days.when i ran rmaa, the frequency response graph was excellent and flat.
After that again the old hangs and lockups started.Sometimes my used to hang at restart at the intel pentium 4 logo.
After that i tried removing other peripherals and tried all the combinations but the wierd thing was that at the same combination the pc wont boot for some few times and would boot at other times.
Also when i inserted my gfx card,my hdd and my audio card cud not be detected.
After few hours my pc booted perfectly but the hdd led was constantly lit(red) for whole 5 hours of my session!!
After another restart i got a message that "please connect power extension cable to 9800 pro"
It disappeared after 2 restarts.
Now when i ran rmaa with gfx card inserted again the same oscillatory waveform is obtained?!!
So i have narrowed down to 3 things that cud be at fault.
My mobo,psu or the cpu.
Cud someone plz help me?

Its a powersupply issue. What psu?
I have got powersafe 400w.
But if it was a psu issue, why does the problem occur sometimes.i mean sometimes my pc remains on without any issues for abt 48 hours on a go and sometimes only for an hour.
And what does the frequency response waveform on rmaa has got to do anything with the gfx card,ie with gfx card inserted i get the worst oscillatory
waveform form my audigy 2 zs and without the gfx card perfect flat response.
Here are the volt reading on the intel active monitor:-
12v:-12v
5v:-5.104v
3.3v-3.266v
Cpu Core(1.38v):-1.341v
Cpu I/O(1.5v):-1.458v

Could you relax the memory timings a bit? That might help. Also you may try running memtest86 to be sure.

If that doesnt show anything , then it must be a motherboard problem as I can see the PSU voltages are well within the range.

the memory timings are already at default..ie 2.5-3-3-8.
I already had tested memory by memtest continuosly, but got a strange result
my first test showed me abt 75 errors in 10 mins, after the next boot i ran the test again for abt 10 hrs on a go and zero errors??!!
Also if the memory was at fault,i think the machine would have frequent restarts which is not the case out here.

It mostly looks like a PSU issue, try with another PSU and check. I had a similar probs comp hanging randomly, turned out some regulator in PSU had blown.

Well i kept my pc on for 3 days on a go,there were no hangs. But on the next boot,it ran for sometime, hanged and the hdd led was constant red.So i rebooted went to bios and the cpu temp showed me 70 c.
Its like everytime my pc hangs my cpu temp rises.
I keep my cpu case open.
My idle cpu temp is 56c,but when i play games or when cpu is at load,it rises to 78c
Also when my pc hangs the hdd led is contant red,i dunno why?

whatz your config ? .... I have a friend who used to have similar problems , his precott( nick named presshott the world over ;) ) had a threshold set to 70 degrees , after booting he used to get 60 Degrees idle and even if he installed any application his procci used to hit 70 -72 and it used to reboot , finally i installed starice in his system , and now it idles at 42-43 and peaks at 52-54 . Everything seems to be working fine .

could be that the heatsink isnt seated properly causing cpu to overheat and lock up. try reseating it again.or you could even clean off the pad and try some thermal paste

try another psu as well to eliminate this as a problem.

ok now now other wierd prob has emerged.
Whenever there are more than 2 hours between my pc sessions, and i boot my pc,it starts for abt 1 sec and then shuts off, then at next boot immediately my pc turns on,screen is totally blank, hdd and power led are constantly lit,the leds on cd-writer constant glowing and when i press the eject button it doesnt work.I have to keep in this state for abt 2 mins, then at next boot all goes well.Again if i shutdown my pc and boot it after more than 2hours,the same prob arises. The prob does not arise for successive boots. But only after 2 hours of idle time during which my pc is off,the prob starts!
Seems i have to warm up my pc for 2mins before it starts!!!
This happens every time also sometimes when my cpu is at full load, the pc restarts.

it all seems to be a PSU problem... since isolating different components and diagnosing dint help...the only last culprit u can point to is the PSU... but then...u can get a different set of RAM modules from ur friends and try it in ur system and see if u experience the same issues...u could do the same with other components also..
