since the last 2-3 days there's a friend of mine who's been calling me up to get suggestions for a online hardware shop.

he is basically got lots of free time these days and wants to open up a site where he could provide products at competitive price along with good services.

he has lots and lots of doubts ..which even i couldnt answer :P

(infact i suggested him not to get into something like this..cause it will require lot and lots of patience and dedication etc. which i doubt he will be able to put in )

still he insists ..so here i go.

what kind of products ..not yet decided....maybe you guys can suggest something.

not much of an investment ..

he is ready to shell out upto 10-12k for a site and it annual maintenance .

is 10-12 k enough for that ?

site needs to be something like this.

Computers, Peripherals, Cameras, Laptops, Gaming Equipment Tech Heaven

or Largest Online Shopping mall in India, Buy and Send Gifts to India

any idea what all services he needs to hire ? specially for the main site \portal and the payment options of credit cards ?(need detail information in this.)

any legal procedures ?

also best place to source the hardware from ? ive got some contacts with distributors might try them...

do they give credit etc ?

what would be the initial investment required to source hardware ?

incase the friend comes up with more questions ..will add more.

any help \suggestions for site as well as what products to get etc ..would be appreciated.

10 -12 K won't be enough...coz you know how the current Hardware scenario is...so the site would be needing constant updation...like removing the products not available..adding the new items....and if he can't do it himself..he may have to hire someone..and he will charge like hell...so if he knows how to maintain his site..well and good...

online payments..you need this

Payment gateways

Payment gateway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Payment Gateway Solutions,Payment Gateway Integration,Ecommerce Payment Gateway India

this s a good one...Payment Gateway in India, Online Bank Transfer, Online Credit Card Processing try t find someone in your city...really helps...

don't know abt legal procedures yet..but let me ring up some guys...

what I suggest is try to make a rappo with some distributors..saying you have this online thing going on..and you will add his products t your page...but he has to give the items to you when its ordered online..keeping your margin..initially he won't give credit..but in due time you would be doing all the business on credit..

hope this helps...

^^ thanks ..i have some idea now..

the friend is very much tech savvy and has quiet good knowledge of internet and stuff. .

so once taught the basics he will be able to update and maintain the site unless and untill some pro knowledge of coding and web designing is required.

even i might help him once in a while if required.

^^ getting stuff from US wont be easy ..KMD has got his ways and contacts ..

my friend doesnt :P. and there are lots of things to deal with ..customs ,duties ..legal issues etc.

doesnt look easy unless weve got contacts.

I'd suggest going for a simpler website. Something like http://deltapage.com/

but just a bit more dynamic. Like have a page listing latest prices, and payment options. I care less about how good the site looks. Its about utility. Only websites that I find useful are delta pages and newegg.

I'm a free lance web designer. I can help out, make it, run it w/e for small fee/cheap hardware/kick and shiggles. :P

You could use software like Joomla+Virtuemart or osCommerce to set up the shop. Those software are free and reliable web hosting etc. shouldn't cost you a lot especially if you buy it from abroad. Indian webhosts are usually more expensive.

Joomla!

VirtueMart: Your free e-commerce solution. - Welcome...

Editing and updating products in these software are very easy and user-friendly. Payment gateways are of course a necessity if you want quick payment processing online rather than having to wait for customers to make payment manually, and then confirm it etc. Payment gateways may cost a lot in initial fees (arnd 50k deposit) if taken from banks ( such as ICICI Payseal ) . Others like abcpayments or ccavenue.com have lesser fees for startup .

Almost all payment processors charge a small fee per transaction.

If I am not wrong, PrimeABGB.com uses a joomla+virtuemart setup.

All the best on your endeavor.

I am always looking for online sites in India where I can buy computer hardware using Credit card.

The dedicated computer stores that als also accept CC, I currently know of are Techshop.in , primeabgb.com and theitdepot.com
