Hey guys i have a 8800gt alpha dog,
just bought a phenom II 955 and Asus m4a78t-e board with 4 gigs of ddr3 ram.
Thing is i havent changed the card since i can max out all the new games.
There is an issue though.
When i run games the card overheats and i have to alt tab and let it cool and then resume the game.
I have to repeat this every 10 mins since the card hits 90 degrees and starts beeping.
Theres no dust on the heatsink, it has a zalman cooler and its in a cm690 with enough ventilation.
Wtf might be the problem. I need to start gaming again but this shit is irritating.

Apply some thermal paste on the core and HS. I recommend Tuniq TX2.

Actually nvidia 8series is pretty hot series i too have a 8600 GT card and it use to go to 90C + while playing games. But i solved the problem by mounting 2x80mm fans on it and now my operating temp while playing games is around 78 and max it goes to 81-82 so you could try this solution as well try mounting a 120mm fan or a 80 mm on card and hopefully it works and it has got to do nothing with removing the heat sink and applying new heat sink paste bcoz i tried it all but the mounting of fans only helped me in the end.

That's some confidence there ^
You never troubleshoot based on assumption or experience, but on the most likely reason.

i doubt this...

8xxxGT series ws wayyy cooler than its rivals (3870, 8800GTX, 8800GTS, 4850)

i suspect the THERMAL PASTE has aged and needs to be replaced.

i agree with Sato ... 8XXX series was cooler..

i had 8600 GT and even with long hours of Assassins Creed never crossed 65

if dust n all isnt issue... well as others suggested see how good is CPU exhaust

another thing... do you have any other pci card... sometimes when u put the cards in parallel .. as in another pci card very close to the GPU then exhaust isnt very effective...

rest coolant paste ... .. or wiring a 120 mm fan on the top with steel wires.. on to the card itself

8800GT has heating issues..Even i have EVGA 8800GT superclocked edition.

In idle temps are like 60-Fan speed-100

On load temps are like 80-Fan speed 100.

Try changing the fan speed and i think that should solve the problem.

As other says also apply Thermal paste

:D

Lol 80 degrees,i have a ati 4850 and at full load it goes to 60-62 degrees with 60% fan speed and i was wondering if there is something wrong with my card but now i feel its pretty normal :ohyeah: .Sorry for the OT

8600GT at 90C+ :o I had the same card for around 15 months, And it never crossed 70C at load for me, Though I replaced the card once, as it went down completely one day for no reason...

That was a reply to this part of your post:-
