XPS17

Upgrade CPU to 2.4Ghz Core i7 2760QM

Upgrade RAM to 8GB DDR3

Upgrade Network card to Centrino-advanced

Total = 97598

Try to get some discount on this. I think upto 10% should be possible if you speak to local store or dell tele-marketing/mail.

Now sell the internal 500GBx2 drives and instead get 1x256GB SSD + 1x1TB 7200rpm HDD + 1x1TB External HDD (a must in hostel)

Why Dell in my opinion?

Much much better after-sales services which are vital for noobs. Moreover, such an expensive laptop needs post warranty protection too, which only dell offers.

GTX555M runs alot cooler than HD5850M.

A friend of mine is facing serious overheating issues in his Asus G73 equipped with HD5850M. Though another friend has the exact same laptop bought together but doesn't face any issues.

HP laptops have also been infamous for their high failure rates in their premium product range.

While VFM products from both these brands have been doing quite well, just the fully loaded ones (Asus G series and HP pavillion DV6 or higher) have'nt been as reliable in my experience.

In my opinion, paying extra for:

Mainly Dell's 17" 3D 1080p dell display instead of normal 15" 768p from Asus

Core i7 2760 <-> 2670

9 cell battery <-> 6 cell

500GBx2 7200rpm <-> 750GBx1 5400rpm

2MP cam <-> 0.3MP

Bluray <-> DVD

Backlit keyboard <-> unknown

etc.

Extras:

1 year Complete cover

Post-warranty services

Unmatched Dell A.S.S.

Dell XPS brand name.

etc.

The Dell XPS17

This is the Asus one I'm assuming:

http://www.flipkart....7b-1cfe6c682251

Even though Asus is much more VFM, that's not the priority here. 17" 3D display will be basic necessity for such a hostel lap/table-top.

In my opinion, paying extra for:

Mainly Dell's 17" 3D dell display instead of normal 15" from Asus - Dell scores here (but 30k+)

Core i7 2760 instead of 2670 - Worthy?

9 cell battery instead of 6 cell - Gaming is never meant for battery usage

1 year Complete cover - Dell+

Post-warranty services - Asus is no bad either

Dell XPS brand name. - Asus is a small brand name?
<

etc.

Even though Asus is much more VFM, that's not the priority here. 17" 3D display is a must. - OP has no where said that 3D is a must. Moreover 3D titles are yet not so prevalent.

Edited my post, with some more + + + for Dell.

PS: Specifications can be compared with specfications and not with comments. Would rather encourage user experiences/reviews or specs.

This is the link you gave. Has incomplete specs.

It's the same model as on flipkart's link. Asus N55SF-S1209V. I would still assume flipkart's specs are true until you give a better & more reliable/buyable link.

BTW the GT555M is too weak for full HD 3D gaming(even normal 2D gaming has constraints at FullHD on GT555M)>

If peace of mind is needed go for Dell.I don't have much of an idea about MSI's service in India but the part about Envy 17 being a hot runner is true all right

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.130.0.html

As you can see the 570M in the MSI 683 is heads and shoulders above the 555 and 5850.The only thing pulling it back is the MSI brandname

I guess you are self knowledged to google it. This is the link though- Specs

Sir, you were supposed to be talking about S1209V.

I've began to doubt that you check your own links
<

Anyways, leave it. Peace out.

The MSI GTX570M model can be considered by OP if someone provides A.S.S. feedback for that region.

OT: I forgot how to use spoiler tags, have they changed?
