8800GT is a single slot design and shud fit most motherboards...

Can you play next gen games at high setting?

No way!

You are not going to save too much money, saving power, if u go for 8800GTS anyway.

Exactly the reason why, 2600XT looks like most ideal candidate right now. Good CAD power, decent gaming power (albeit with few AA/AF sacrifices), reasonable power-draw and bloody good price.

From Gaming Perspective

Low Budget Best Buy: 8600GT

Mid Budget: RV670 OR the 8800GT

High End: Wait for the Next wave of gpus from nvidia and ati stable, if u wanna go high end, wait and it will be a wait well worth considering 9xxx high end is rumoured to push 1TeraFlop....that is 3 times the 8800GTX

2600XT GDDR3 is not really as good as the 8600GT, DDR4 competes directly with the 8600GTS and loses too.........rather buy a 8800GT or RV670

There are rumours floating around that the die size of "G92" is 289 mm2. Now if u scale G80(480 mm2) from 90 nm to 65 nm, ie 480/(90*90/65*65) you get 250 mm2. Now throw in some die size for I/O, reduce some for smaller memory controller and account for imperfect scaling. This means G92 is a full G80 on 65 nm? :O

Edit: i forgot to mention, you have to throw some transistors in for PCIE 2, VP2 engine, DX10.1 and SM 4.1

I would take Inquirer's articles with pinch of salt... they have very bad reputation for misleading articles or exaggerating facts beyond reasonable proportions.
