Genius Ergo 525 Review

Oh, Finally my first review on TE....plz bear it :)

Some OT & POS to begin with

Anyway Bangalore guys might be knowing that I have bought a Genius Ergo 525 Mouse.Well I was looking for a Good replacemnt to my almost 3 years old Logitech value optical mouse for quite a while. The hunt for the mouse started as early as the TE bangalore meet....Sandy suggested me to go for MX 518( he just can't stop praising his Mx 518)......chaos told me better he would get me a MS Laser 6000 frm MS store in Redmond for just 22$ all inclusive :).

So around 2 months later...i got so much pissed off by my oldy Logi mice ....as the pointer was moving on its own & the pointer got lost while fragging in quack 3 ......that I decided enough is enough..Well enough of POS....I guess u guys are reday for the review.....Here it goes

Well me & Sandy went out to get my mouse as well as he wanted to buy a TV Tuner....so first we went to S.P Road & got the TV tuner for sandy(He didn't listen to me & got a vanilla compro card , whereas I told to take a Media center kit with the Hauppage PVR 150 & MCE remote....anyway he went bust....ah again POS....leave this...its a story for another day)
Finally we went to the distri (Transtek Infoways) ......teh guy there could find only the "Only Ergo 525 pack" whereas i wanted to see the "Ergo 525 + QCK Steelpad Combo". Finally he searched arnd in his warehouse & found huge stock of that. Anyway it was imported only a few days back....that no sticker of the Indian distri as well as MRP was pasted. So he had no idea of the combo price. We tried to convince him that combo is just a new model :) as a pad can't cost so much...finally he got hold of a .xls sheet & found that it costed them 26$ in place of the 19$ for the vanilla one. Finally he told we need to give 2100+tax......settled for 2100 all inclusive....which I thought to be a pretty decent price.....Finaly got the combo......Anyway the QCK pad was not for me as I already have a Sun Microsystem cloth pad which is almost same quality.

Info about Ergo 525

The Ergo 525 Gaming Mouse uses a laser has its advantage over LED based sensors like no power down . The sensor used in the Ergo 525 is ADNS-6010 LaserStream, a new generation laser sensor developed by Avago . Logitech's G5 and Razer's CH incorporate the same sensor.

key features:

· Laser technology provides 100 times more tracking power than LED optical mice
· One button sensitivity adjustment to 2000, 1600, 800and 400 dpi resolution
· Works reliably on glossy or uneven surfaces
· 6.4 mega pixels/sec image processing provides precise tracking
· Programmable multimedia one-touch buttons for superior performance
· Ergonomic design and comfortable control
· 4D Scrolling function - up/down/left/right scrolling
· Class 1 laser product , passed IEC 60825-1 regulation.

The Mouse(First Impressions)

The mouse has a glossy silver black colored finish on the top, and non-glossy black rubberised finish on the sides. The bottom has four plastic feet. It has a smooth feel.
The good thing with the combo is that the mouse is in slick & sexy shining black in colour rather than the dull blue in the vanilla(strictly my choice though :)).
Anyway plugged in the mouse.....well it was not detected instantly though...took around a minute or so for the mouse to come to life.

The mouse is nice and smooth. The button to change the DPI works right away without even the need to install any software. On the lowest settings the point shoots across the screen with the slightest movement. On the higher settings you have to sweep your arm across the desk if you need to get the cursor to move any significant distance.on using for some I found that about 800DPI was the best for generally use.

Gaming

As far as gaming is concerned.....i tried it by playing Farcry, Quake 3, CSS(offline with bots), Prey ( yup I have got it already :)).Theoretically the ability to switch to a higher DPI is useful when sniping in an FPS game. But in fast paced games like Q3 & Prey u can't wait to change the dpi...by that time u will get pawned or the target is gone :).I’m sure if I’d stuck with it I would have eventually gotten good at it and it would have been of some use.So the dpi change thing is actually a mixed bag. But let me tell u at 1600 dpi after playing for arnd 2 hrs quake 3...it felt like i have got 3 times better wiith the machine gun as u can move at high speeds & can change dir while shotting very fast...helps quite a bit in Q3......abt games like Farcry sniping was awesome with gr8 precison as u have the time to change the DPI & pawn enimies.

Now comes the working on various surfaces.....I tried without the mousepad...on the bed .....& even on a steel plate......its works.....though surely it skips a bit in the bed & the steel plate :).
Chaos's bro also worked with the mouse in the bed when i went to his house.....it was working nicely.....so the Azilent Laser sensor works perfectly

Ergonomics:

Finally comes the ergonomics of the mouse which is the most important thing for me.Thats why I insisted on going to the distri as I could hava a feel of the mouse before taking it.
Comfort wise even after a good few hours of frantic gaming, the mouse remained comfortable in my hand. Well its better than the MX 518 in the way that the left side of the mouse where u rest ur little & index finger is more rounded & hence more comfortable.
Lemme find something to bad mouth abt this :)

Well its almost 10 days that I have been using for.....I did a late review as I wanted to find any cons is there. Well there is no bad thing as always...everything can't be too good.Well the clicking feel on this mouse is not as comfrtable as in a Logitech....its as responsive though.....may be i can't get off with my habit of more depth in the clicking buttons of my old Logi mouse. But the click depth as it seems is slightly less...& this seems a bit out of my natural habit to click hard :).

The QCK steel Pad

As of the QCK steelpad....i used it only for a day......it is so big ( i know a its like a baby to the Mantis) that it doesn't even fit my table. The pad seemed quite good...but truly I m not a very hardcore gamer that I can judge its quality. I guess chaos can add up his review of the QCK to this. This would become a comprehensive review then.

Final Conclusion:

I'd give this mouse 5/5 considering its price to performance ratio.
Otherwise it would score around 4.

Pros:

High DPI
Low price tag
Very good ergonomics
Does the job extremely well

Cons:

The depth of the buttons(left & right) seems a bit less compared to Logitech ( Strictly based on my Logi optical only)
Otherwise nothing I can bad mouth abt the product:hap2:

Edit: Forgot to add...this is a mouse strictly for right-handed people.

Finally some pix taken with my Canon Digital Ixus....The QCK Steepad pics are there in my rig gallery if anyones' interested.

Wow i didnt know this....:(
Maybe the laser sensor is always on whereas optical sensor powers down when not moved....

i think it's only the LED in some mice that powers down, not the sensor itself. my diamondback plasma is an OPTICAL mouse but it uses infrared instead of LED for the blue light.. it never powers down. my MS wheel mouse optical has a bright red LED.. it doesn't seem to power down too.

i do know what you're talking about though and i have used optical mice which seemed to 'power down' in the past. the cursor responded immediately when moved again though so i think it was only the light.

Just got the mouse+steelpad today. Amazing mouse i must say. A must buy for anyone on the lookout for a gaming mouse around 2k. Picked up the mouse+pad for 1950+tax.

Hi,

Nice review of the ergo 525.
I'm a designer so I need a mouse with personalizable button functions, more specifically could assign the copy and paste (ctrl+c ctrl+v) to mouse buttons. ¿Can this mouse do that? I'll really appreciate if you check it for me before I buy it. I'll appreciate to a respose to my mail if possible diegoalberto at gmail Thanks and sorry for my bad english.

^ Just like in the other review the last time your review was edited on Nov.22 by Blade - also right now i don't see any defunct image tags in your post.

Not sure - whats wrong. Are you 100% certain pictures were linked. Else, post them now and i would append the first post.

PS: Let me check other reviews - maybe all are having the same problem.

See I had mentioned this

After this I had linked the pics

You added the pictures later ? If yes - it must be within one hour of your post or you would not be able to submit.

Not sure man - even if links don't work the tags would be present in your post - unless someone deletes the tags. But logs indicate it was edited last on Nov 22nd and don't i think it would have been to delete the image tags.

Any case, if you don't mind re-upload the images so that i can append it to first post. And this time i would keep a tab on your images ;)

i do NOT agree with all the reviews i read about this Genius Laser Mouse.

This mouse just plain sucks.

I had it because i thought it would be a good alternative to the more expensive Logitech MX518.

The Genius mouse (even with a LASER and more DPI than the Logitech) has HORRIBLE tracking.

I tested it on my standard Mousepad, on my plain desk surface, and on a plain white sheet of paper. Tracking is HORRIBLE.

If you move very slow..the mouse doesnt even MOVE at all !!!

The pointer just sits on the screen while you move the mouse.

I cant even remotely imagine how you would want to game with this mouse and its horrible tracking performance. I would not give such a comment if i hadn't tested this mouse on a variety of surfaces.

It doesnt even come close to a MX518, even with its higher DPI and Laser.

i have just recently bought the Ergo 525 mouse, i am an avid hardcore gamer, COD4 rocks online, ergonomics feels nice, but HuGe PrObLeMo''', for the life of me, i cannot assign the extra buttons ingame, (i am an IT guy and have been for many years so i think i know what im doing IT related) i checked the software, that came with the mouse, and i cannot assign mouse 4 and mouse 5 buttons to the mouse with the software, there is just no option for it, theres plenty other options that i can assign to the buttons but none of them help me, as i specificlly need to assign buttons 4 and 5 to the mouse with teh software.

even went to genius web site and downloaded the gaming drivers for the mouse, but this doesnt help either, as there is still no ware (well that i can find) were you can specifically setup key associations to mouse button 4 and mouse button 5.

so after much frustration, i went and bought the next one up which was the Navigator 535, and with this mouses software you can settup mouse button 4, and mouse button 5. (regarding the Navigator 535)

now ingame with call of duty 4 i can assign actions to mouse button 4 and mouse button 5. (regarding the Navigator 535)

i gave the Ergo 525 to a friend to use, but i would still like to help him assign the extra buttons with the Ergo 525 to actions ingame with call of duty 4, as we play COD4 online together very often. (4 - 6 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year LoLs)

any ideas of suggestions would be of great and beneficial help to us.

thank you kindly in advance.
