A quick guide on how to buy the right graphic card that will suit your needs in the best way..

One thing for sure. Today's graphic cards are really fast. Arguably, there's no other hardware or component that is advancing as rapidly in technology as are graphic cards. Fabrication process are getting tighter, yeilds are increasing, video memory is getting faster. The only problem is that for all the die-hard gamers out there, it becomes very difficult to figure out when is a good time to take the plunge into a new graphic card purchase & more importantly which one to choose.

Based on their affordibility, the graphic cards are catagorized in to Entry
level, low end, mid-range, high end & Enthusiast..

So how does one approach buying a graphic card according to his/her budjet, Here you can find it -

1) Entry Level(Rs 2000- 4000)

Gaming on entry level has always been a tricky situation. You have limited money & you want to make sure you get maximum performance for every time you spend on graphic card. When shopping for such graphic cards, first note what level of performance you are looking for- Are you more of a movie buff or a gamer or both? Make your decision then accordingly. Suggested Graphic cards in this segment are

ATI - HD3450, HD3470, HD2600Pro, HD2400XT & HD2400Pro

brands - Sapphire, GeCube, MSI & ASUS.

NVIDIA - 8400GS, 8500GT & 8600GT

brands - XFX, eVGA, Zotac, Mercury, MSI etc
2) Low End (Rs 4000-8000)

It is for all you casual gamers out there who wants to have maximum
performance at low budjet.Suggested Graphic cards in this segment are

ATI - HD3650 & HD2600XT

brands - Sapphire, GeCube, MSI, Gigabyte & ASUS.

NVIDIA - 9600GSO, 8600GTS & 8600GT

brands - XFX, eVGA, Zotac, Leadtek, MSI etc
3) Mid-range (Rs 8000-16000)

Graphic cards belong to this group offer stellar performance without being too taxing on the wallet. Some of these cards are so powerful that their performance is comparable to the high end counter parts. Suggested graphic cards are

ATI - HD3870, HD3850, HD2900Pro & HD2900GT.

brands - Sapphire, GeCube, MSI, Gigabyte & ASUS.

NVIDIA - 8800GT, 8800GS & 9600GT

brands - XFX, eVGA, Zotac, Leadtek, MSI etc
4) High End (Rs 16000- 30000)

Consider a graphic card from this catagory only if you are a hardcore gamer who thrives eye candy. Pumping playable frames at 1600x1200 is a cake walk for these cards.Hence, to utilize the full potential of these cards, you need at least a 22 inch TFT & additionally you need a meaty PSU(at least 500W). Suggested Graphic cards in this segment are

ATI - HD3870X2 & HD2900XT

brands - Sapphire, GeCube, MSI, Gigabyte & ASUS.

NVIDIA - 9800GTX, 8800GTX & 8800GTS

brands - XFX, eVGA, Zotac, Leadtek, MSI etc
5) Enthusiast(Rs 30000 & above)

If you have a cash to burn, this is the right place where you can do that.Only two graphic cards are present in this catagory that can satisfy your pleasure- 9800GX2 & 8800 Ultra.

nice small guide but i guess 9600gso = 8800gs?

and also

9600gso Over clocked = stock 9600gt

Over clocked 9600gt = stock 8800gt

this theory hold good @ 1280x 1024

and higher the resolutions 8800gt is the winner ,followed by 9600gt and 9600gso

correct me if i am wrong :)

Lol, no SLI setups mentioned??

8800GTS 512 MB SLI and the 9800GTX SLI beats the crap outta the 9800GX2 in most games and benchmarks!!!

And the cheaper investment as well [well if the guy can manage the 9800GX2 an SLI board is certainly a no brainer right???]; ;)

Besides all this will change starting June 23rd I guess; [Hint: Forgot the nvidia200 series??? and the ATI 4xxx series??]

And never heard of a brand called Powercolor??? They make awsum ATI cards FYI;

And what abt Gainward for nvidia??? :P

And where've u placed the 9600GSO dude??? :rolleyes: Go read its specs;

And what abt the Galaxy 9600GSO OC which can be converted to a 8800GTS 512??? Mention that;

the guide is only for single graphic card, no SLI or CrossfireX.. then id have suggested 2x 8600GT in low end range instead of single 8600GTS.. that doesn't make sense. i hope you understood that.:ohyeah:

and i know all those changes, new cards from both NVIDIA & ATI are about to come up..i will update this guide in july month when those cards are available in bulk..

cards from powercolor were available in india a year ago(only X1900/1600/1300/800/300 series) till then ive not seen a single Dx 10/10.1 card here, so there was no need to mention that:tongue: ..even DIAMOND cards are not available here, do you think that makes any sense to mntion ?:rofl:

regarding Gainward, they are rearly available here..;)

My local retailer can source a Gainward/Poercolor for me from Mumbai;

care to post link of any retailer or distributer that sells Powercolor DX 10/10.1 cards.. ive not found any! :tongue:

Good idea(writing a guide) but the execution has to be refined.

The classification is based primarily on price, is the secondary criteria.

Secondly you should have posted your recommendations for every segment, imo if you can make these changes it would be great.

There are many cards out there, imo there is no need for info on dead wood e.g the ati 2900 series, just make it short and keep it simple.

LOL, i knew you will post link of MEDIATECH site here..:rofl: :rofl:

you know, Mediatech used to sell Powercolor Graphic cards here, 2 years back & now they they still advertise PowerColor X850XT on their home page:tongue: & they have not updated any card then..:rofl:

bottom line is POWERCOLOR & DIAMOND cards are not availble in india.. u will find only X1K & lower series from Powercolor via Mediatech

i have heard Connect3D are availble but very rare..i remember, its Inspan Infotech which sells Connect3D cards..:ohyeah:

Yep! agreed, i take few sentence frm that site but most of words(80%) & all suggestd cards r my own point of view and nothing else..
