I have started getting the error "Print spooler service is not running" when i am trying to add any printer over the network. This is happening with my office laptop. The said printer which i am trying to add did work before but suddenly stopped couple of days back. I am not sure what caused this. I am not able to add any printer as the problem is at my PC's end. The printer spooler service is ideally supposed to start when computer starts (set to Automatic) but it is not started as of now. Even if i manually start the service, it stops again which means i cannot do anything.
I tried adding the service to some sort of exclusion (my computer -> Right click -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Data Execution Prevention)
I checked that the printer spooler service is dependent on RPC and found that RPC service is running well.

I am completely clueless as what the issue is and how i should resolve the same.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer drivers.
The printers do not show under Printers and Faxes so there is no way i can uninstall it.

did u by any chance used any optimization app to shut the spooler service down? in general optimized ur PC?

I suggest u Do this -

1.goto Ultimate Windows Tweaker, a TweakUI for Windows 7 & Vista | The Windows Club and Download UWT v 2.2

2.goto System performance and Look for "disable printer spooling Service" under "optimize services"

3.Hopefully It will be Checked, uncheck it,Hit apply and restart ur machine

Hope this Helps

I never used anything like that but still i will try what you are saying. The printer spooler starts when i explicitly start it but then it stops again in few seconds.

When u said u manually started the service did u mean from Task Manager->Services (or Services directly ) ? I had this messaged pop-up once when I stopped this service as printer was not printing the document after a Paper Jam , I then restarted the Service and it worked fine. You said your service is stopped at system startup ? Did you check whether your Startup option in MSCONFIG is set to 1)Normal startup or 2)Diagnostic startup or 3)Selective Startup ? If the service is not Started at System startup and u manually Start it from Task Manager->Services does it stop immediately or after some interval of time ?

I tried starting the "Printer spooler" service by going to services.msc. It starts and then automatically stops after couple of seconds.

Tried msconfig and it has Selective startup. Not sure if it was always this way.

I went to msconfig and clicked the services tab and i do see the status of Printer spooler as running, not sure why i am getting this error even when it shows running.
