One thing we have learned from KDE4 is that its not a good idea to make drastic change to a desktop environment that the users have been used to for a long time. Hopefully the Gnome developers will keep that in mind as they work on Gnome 3.0 release for next year. Gnome is known for making subtle incremental changes instead of doing major overhaul, but the changes they have planned for Gnome 3 is much bigger than we have come to expect from Gnome.

Replacing window manager and Gnome panel.

Gnome-shell
gives a glimpse of what Gnome 3 will end up looking like. Even though its in the pre-alpha release state its surprisingly very stable. The Gnome panel is replaced by an “Activities†panel and “dock†on the sidebar which displays “Recent docs†and “Application†list minimizes the same way Wordpress 2.7 sidebar panel contracts and expands.

Suse users can download Gnome-shell packages from here, Ubuntu users will need to build from source.

Its refreshing to see developers taking new approach to the way users interact with desktop without making a total mess out of it or copying each other. I personally like this new way of desktop management even though it takes a little bit of getting used to it (all changes do). But I would like to see an option to switch back and forth from the old way to the new way of desktop management when they finally roll it out with Gnome 3.0. With Gnome 2.28 this will be an optional feature.

Only time will tell if users will embrace this changes or reject it like KDE4, but as a long time Gnome user I can only say that the future of Gnome looks promising.

Although I don't Agree with the Author who is so partial towards Gnome ,I posted it here ,that you can read the comments on the article.:)

Welcome back prakashan, where were you missing for so long? :D

@mods: can you rename the title (with OP's blessing) to something like "GNOME 3 discussion thread" so its the main thread for all things GNOME 3?

Personally I want gnome to be more good looking but I don't think they can come up with something as good as KDE 4 !:P

Also, they can never come up with all the problems that KDE managed to come up with their 4.x releases :P

There is nothing wrong in Kde if some wants it as their choice.infact ,Kde users are much more than Gnome users according to linuxquestions.org's yearly poll for more than 3 years. :)

doh, i used to think gnome was much more popular...

i was initially a kde fan 10 yrs ago when i first started using linux because it was more "windows like" UI... then switched to gnome for its clean/simple UI with ubuntu 7.04 in 2007 after suse had some bad releases... now switched back to kde 4.2 in 2009 with kubuntu 9.04 and loving it... but last week ran ubuntu netbook remix and once again was reminded of the clean/simple UI of gnome which is really good :D

i think it is important for both DEs to succeed. gnome just needs to polish its ui looks to make it a little more modern and it will be just fine... im not sure about the "gnome shell" thing - maybe that is good for netbooks/MIDs but for desktops they should stick to full blown existing UI ideas...

Check out this awesome mockup..

Nice extension of the wobbly windows effects to more places :) FYI the Windows sliding over each other effect is already there in KDE 4.3 called, well, "Sliding Windows" heh.

GNOME will have the Clutter API to play with thanks to Intel's sponsorship... KDE will have the QT animation framework thanks to Nokia sponsorship... I'm willing to bet KDE will release effects faster than GNOME :) Check out Lucas Murray's KDE blog: Undefined Fire :: Digital Tinkery By Lucas Murray he writes a lot of the effects... or you can just subscriber to Planet KDE, Planet GNOME in your blog reader...

That's EXACTLY why I switched from KDE 3.5.x to to Gnome. I still use a few kde apps like klipper and ksnapshot for want of good equivalents in Gnome.
