GO: ASUS Xonar Sound Cards

The Bose QuietComfort 3 were the headphones of our choice

One thing that any audio-geek needs is a good amp, and this is not present on this sound card
some gems spotted on the techtree review

I wonder where TT finds these ijjuts. I suppose this one has been under a rock since the ye olde days when the soundcard drove the speakers :P

Hey guys, I have the logitech z-2300 THX speakers, and use my comp for gaming, movies, and music. I am pretty happy with the onboard HD output of my P5Q deluxe, will buying any of these cards really give me the difference?

jasku read the previous page. avi_avadhut asked the same thing , and it has been answered....

hey greenhorn, I did see his post, he has better speakers, and did not mention, what he intends to use the card for, so I am still wondering if surround sound would be the only difference? from the onboard?

the Z2300 are good , but its more bass , or rather boom oriented. I suppose it might improve sound quality a bit, but With better sounding ( MX 5021/Audioengines/klipsch GMX) speakers , the difference would have been more obvious :)

After a lot of searching I have learned that the cards are not available in US/Europe anywhere. So will have to wait for a few days I guess.

Also 1 thing that is worrying me is that the HDAV1.3 needs power. I hope it’s not to power hungry and runs cool. Don’t have much space and power to feed it :(

@Greenie and TH

My bro's 280 on the striker extreme and the Northbridge copperware make the pci-e 1x almost inaccessible, how would the D1 be as compared to the DX being a PCI variant? Considering the huge ~277 MB/S difference in the slots' speeds?

i have xonar dx + z-2300 and the diff between onboard and xonar is huge :ohyeah: , much louder sound and better bass , with onboard sounds get distorted if i put some equalizer patterns but with xonar even if i set eq to high bass no distortion :D . only problem is my mobo northbridge fab blows hot air on xonar if i put on pci-e top slot :( so i have put it in lower pci-e 16x slot :)

None in terms of processing power.

8 streams x 1.5 mb/s (assuming all streams are uncompressed PCM, unlikely but let's stick with it) = 12 mb/s

PCI bandwidth is 133 mb/s, or over 10x the required bandwidth. Even if you look at processing overhead of 50%, you're well within the bus limits.

The problem is PCI latency (NOT the BIOS setting), which creates problems in some implementations. An example is the 690G chipset. In my Asus M2A-VM, system latency is about 90us with the LAN switched on. Not too shabby, one needs to set a buffer of about 3 seconds with SSRC operating at 'Ultra' quality. The Jetway 690G board I had before this should have similar performance. Right?

Wrong. The Jetway was at about 180-190us system latency, and would just not operate at all with SSRC at Ultra mode, even with a 6 second buffer (which means music would play a couple of seconds after you hit play). It may have been a faulty board.

The point is, PCI is sufficient unless it's badly implemented.

Thanks Sangram, quite a useful post that.

Waiting for predator to update on the availability and pricing of the D1 now.
