So in a couple of weeks time, I'll be leaving Delhi for Bangalore for my summer internship.

I've never been to the city before. I'll be working in an office in S.R Nagar for 8 weeks.

Do the Bangalore residents have any tips for living in the city? Ways to commute? I'm actively hunting for an accommodation and have found a PG on sharing basis at 'Madhavan Park'. Is this a good area? I've been looking at Craigslist too but most accommodations are near MG Road. I'd like something close to SR nagar as possible, preferably a single occupancy.

Thanks for any and all help. In all probability as the departure date comes closer I'll have more and more questions. :D

P.S.: Do most people there (like shopkeepers, auto driverr) know Hindi/English? :ashamed:

Avoid rikshaws. they are the worst people u can deal with in bangalore and for a ride which mite cost u 40-50 bucks, u mite simply end up paying 110-135 bucks. :@ and make sure ur carrying an umbrella. cz its raining there. Got drenched on my way to the airport last week to come back to Mumbai.. and m sure its still raining there especially in the evenings. :)

lol , your title sounds like you are entering Afghanistan or something :D .

Come here , in 2 days you will get adjusted , may be forget your town also .

I came to Bangalore 2 years back from Delhi, and its awesome!

It rains, plenty of places nearby to go for weekend trips, pubs that play heavy metal exclusively >:), no bollywood music!.

Only things that suck here is that you don't get paratha/stuffed paratha that kind of stuff which I am used to having as breakfast :( only idli, dosa, vada etc. North Indian cuisine shops open after 10am mostly. Bangalore sleeps at 10Pm...Also, chicks are no where near eye pleasing as compared to dilli di kudiyan :D

Welcome to Bangalore! :D

Just learn two three words of Kannada and you will be okay. "Kannada Gothilla" = I don't know Kannada

"Hindi/English Gothu" = I know Eng or Hindi.. or something like that

Banglore is a nice place, you will like it... amazing.. people there are very discipline unlike north india where there is total chaos.

Bangalore may be a nice place but that doesn't mean you have to make statements like these.

Chaos and ill discipline is everywhere and not confined to north India itself.

now there are places like "Go Veg", "Mast Kalandar", "Mirch Masala" where you can get good northie food.

tips to survive in bangalore:

1) be prepared for rain every day evening. you will be surprised at the amount of rain that this garden city gets :)
2) traffic jams everywhere
3) you can find paying guest accomodation all over blr so that wont' be a big problem
4) MG Road, Indira Nagar, Koramangala are most happening places.

Well weather of Bangalore is fantastic...you will love it...there might be some language problems with auto drivers..prefer to use Volvo A/C buses...and it's a nice place...you will certainly love it...

PS: I am from north india ;)

been living in bangalore for the last 2 years and i simple love this city...as for local travel you can use the volvo buses...also if you decide to catch an auto try to get one with an electronic meter...for travelling both goa and pondi are just 6-8 hrs drive away and there are many nearby locations you can visit

traffic is a pain though but you being from delhi would have no problem ;) remember that unlike Delhi Bangalore now have no night life local markets start shutting down by 9 and all pubs and restaurants by 11:30

hmmm did not saw open gutter there, smelly place, no one honks there unnecessarily, agreed it has the worst traffic, north india has more people, that cause chaos, maara maari.. but construction is just ruining this place...

in case you are wondering i am a north indian.

Figured you'd say that but why is it that i always get lower fares in avg with a non-electronic one :)

I can think of a very simple hack regadless of meter used to raise price, just use a smaller gear to measure distance. you see the wire connected to meter going downwards ? its attached to a gear lower down that measures the distance. No need to tamper with the meter just substitute the gear and its done.

A gear with 20% fewer teeth = instant 20% raise :D

Meter rigging is quite rampant and chances of encountering it are higher at night, the only way you can tell is if you do the same distance regularly and can then compare the average, usually when i find its 20-30% over i insist on paying them what i normally pay for the route. Interesting thing is not a single guy argued with me over it :)

i am not doubting you mate just shared my personal experience with the OP to help him out :)
cheers :)

It costs just Rs 15 to rig an autorickshaw meter

mechanics in bylanes of delhi tamper meters of autos at two external points, without breaking its seal, and thus avoid any risk of being caught. ‘‘since tyre revolutions are eventually connected to rotations in the meter, the two connecting junctions outside the meter can be easily tampered,’’ says a mechanic in karol bagh.

Which is why moves such as this by the mumbai govt are useless :)

Given a choice between a electronic meter and a mechanical one, my preference would be for a mechanical because its less precise, unless you want to know the distance covered.
