Hi,

Ever since I moved my 3 year old downloading-rig to a quieter room, I find the CPU fan quiet loud. Its the AMD stock cooler that came with the processor AMD 64 Athlon 3200 (Socket 939). On closer inspection, I found that my idle CPU temperature is around 36-37 Celcius and CPU fan speed is around 3500-3700 rpms. Is it possible that I am overcooling my CPU? If the ideal idle temperature is higher for this CPU (say 45 C) then I can reduce my fan speed to lower the noise. Does it sounds sensible? Please advise.

Thanks!

Ok Guys, no responses from you yet but I did my own research and this is what I have done - I discovered that there is no real ideal temperature for CPU. Its fine if its under 60C all the time and within 10 degrees of system temperature. So I enabled 'cool-n-quiet' (an AMD processor feature) in my computer with a target CPU temperature of 40C. After that, my CPU temperature has increased to 37-38C (very slight 1-2 degree increase) and my CPU fan speed has dropped to 1900-2000 rpms (a solid drop of 1500-1700 rpms)!

Hence my objective is achieved!

My OC'ed 3200+ @ 2.6GHz(in my dload rig) with a GlacialTech cooler runs at 47-50C Idle!!(prolly due to dust!:P )

I guess i'll bring it back to stock frequencies and try cool n quiet!:D

Thanks and congrats! u found what u were lookin for!:hap2:
