Seems theres a limit of around 5-10 to the number of updates that can be posted per day

Nope, thats the messages you can receive on ur cell.

THis is the number of messages/posts/updates you can post on the channel. e.g., try setting a channel for the BBC news feed and check after some hours, you will get only 5-6 messages and after that, even if yuo try to manually post on the channel, you will get a message saying that too many posts to the channel in the last 24hrs or something.

Thats what I did and found out

Can you unsubscribe once you're subscribed to a channel?

And if you don't want, remove your mobile number from google's directory?

You can unsubscribe From channels AND you can remove your number too..just go to settings..
