Google Wave is an online tool for real-time communication and collaboration. A wave can be both a conversation and a document where people can discuss and work together using richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

What is a wave?

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

Watch some tech videos and get more information from here: About Google Wave

Currently, Google Wave is invite only. I hope to receive an invite by tonight, so will be able to give my opinion only then. If someone else has already had the invite and have been using this, put down your views here.
EDIT:
Some more info can be had here: Google Wave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Google plans to make most of this as open source, so we can expect more features to be added in the form of plugins or extensions.

I don't want to turn this thread into "wave request thread", but if someone has an invite, please do send it to me on ashwin.1286 @ gmail DOT com :P

I've sent request for invite... let's see how it goes. If it doesn't work out then probably have to poke couple of distant friends who are working in Google. :P

Google 'Wave' set to sink internet rivals

San Francisco: Google's highly anticipated real-time communications service is not "ready for prime time," but the company said on Tuesday it was on track to begin the biggest field test yet of the potentially groundbreaking Google Wave.

The Internet search leader intends to launch a limited preview of the service, already tested by developers and considered one of the company's most promising innovations as it seeks to widen its footprint among corporate clients.

Experts say the project has the potential to advance Google's plans to provide software to corporations, as well as giving Google a bigger role in a social networking space now dominated by companies like Facebook and Twitter.

Wave, first announced in May, aims to combine instant messaging, email, document handling and social networking features in one package.
In a pair of posts on the official Google blog on Tuesday, it also said it was exploring plans for a "monetisable wave extension store" that would allow developers to sell software that enhances the service's capabilities.

The comments come a day before Google is due to send invitations to access Wave to more than 1,00,000 developers, individual testers and "select" corporate users of Google Apps — a suite of office-oriented applications from email to word processing — in the biggest field test of the new service to date.

Wave was developed by a small team in Australia, led by brothers Jens and Lars Rasmussen. "Some of you have asked what we mean by preview. This just means that Google Wave isn't quite ready for prime time. Not yet, anyway," wrote Lars Rasmussen in Tuesday's post.
He noted that Wave still experiences occasional downtime, crashes and sluggishness. He said that Google will allow some of the new Wave preview users to nominate friends, family and colleagues to use Wave. REUTERS

google wave really created a flutter on the internet over the past couple of days. wasn't able to get an invite myself but i'm hoping i get in eventually... the concept seems awesome.

Can someone please send me an Invite :ashamed: MY ID is: mrinmay[dot]bhattacharjee[at]gmail[dot]com :P - Please Please Please :)

:D Relishing the wave experience.. :P The wave is still not fully ready for public use. It has many bugs.

But I have been chatting with my brother for the past 1 hour on wave, and I find it to be interesting. Everything is real-time, so you can see your friend typing, making typos, and then correcting them. (Dangerous, eh..?) You can also edit what your friend has typed, which adds an interesting aspect.. This should be very useful for online discussions among a team of individuals. You can add your friends to the wave at any point of your discussion. Apparently, there are a few plugins or addons or whatever, but I still haven't experimented with them.

It is obvious that I have just ventured into one dimension of wave only. I'll add more later after some more experimentations with the wave.

making typos, and then correcting them. (Dangerous, eh..?)

Sure there's no way to turn that real time off, so its sentences at a time ?

..kinda like every IM in existence today.

^^you know that feature was part of Microsoft net meeting long long time ago.

So its not something revolutionary. Seeing things as being typed is not that great as it may lead to many a embarrassing moments :P

So guess ppl will be asking to have that as an option :)

Only looks good in movies not IRL.

Need some questions answered...

Is this like an IM client? And connectable only with Wave users?

(Yeah, didn't watch/read about the new wave! :P)
