Hello Folks

After reading the stuff written by audio savants such as esanthosh, faheem, BF1983 [no offense to those i missed out] i got a Brainwavz M1 a coupla months back. Plugged it in ,played one of my favorite songs E nomine - Mitternact and Viola I'm a convert. I'm never going back to anything that cannot bring a smile to my face again.

But as all good things my M1's left capsule stopped working.

And now im on the hunt for a much better, much more tight bassed[both quantity and quality] IEM.

And even though i read extensively , i could not comprehend the ideas of Width ,Depth, Height of the sound stage etc yes i understand the concept but they just don't make much sense to me.

The two things i like are the bass and the treble. I like the bass to be punchy and send vibrations deep into my ear canal and the "tweeter sound" which i hope is treble i like in my songs. Apologies for being crude but such is the extent of my knowledge, which I'm seriously hoping to increase exponentially in the coming weeks.

I listen mostly to...

Rock [Poets of the Fall, Evanescence, Pink...]

Metal / Heavy Metal [E nomine, Devil Driver, Disturbed...]

Hip Hop [Eminem, Kayne West, Busta Rhymes....]

Tamil Vocals, Hindi Vocals

Would really like some insight into the this guys.

Budget : 3.5k [can push a teeny bit if its absolutely necessary]

Source : 90 % of the time Samsung Vibrant [till i get a clip +], 10 % of the time PC.

Thanks.

Stopped working ? why cant your send them back for a replacement..

Would you like something that sounds similar to M1?

M1 is balanced and if you want something that sounds as good as M1, but with more quality bass, there can be some choices among balanced IEMs.

Good Bass and Treble can also include V-Shaped IEMs.

Do you want to buy locally with warranty? Then, it restricts the choices to a minimum.

If you are game for importing / can get stuff from US / elsewhere, then it opens up possibilities.

@esanthosh : Yes i really like M1, but would need some more punchy bass both in quantity and quality, and i have no inkling as to what a V-Shaped iem is. Its better if the sound is warm, rather than analytical. U know bombay jayshree yes? i like her songs like [malargale, vaseegara], i want the iem to make her voice as natural as it can be made to sound, while having a really good amount of bass.

I can get from KL/Malaysia but thats about it, don't want to import from US as there would be no chance of getting a RMA.

Please do let me know your choices.

@nuke, I really got no idea mate, im here for choices.

A pair of denon c252s seem to fit the bill.

From an online review

"Sonically, there's a very different voice present when compared to other Denon earphone models. The AH-C751s, AH-C551s and AH-C351s all tend to be quite bright in the treble with exceptionally deep, smooth bass, but a less prominent mid-range. But the exceptionally loud C252s instead produce a powerful mid-range and strong low end, but without the particularly bright treble."

From what I have read Fischer Audio Silver Bullet is a perfect upgrade for the M1, It has a balanced sound just like the M1 but better in every area.

But I don't know much about its availability and RMA services. May be esanthosh can give you more details on this.

I bought SB v2 after I sent back the M1 loaner, so never compared head-to-head. But, from my notes of M1, I would say SB is a little different.
  • M1 has lesser bass quantity. SB has good, but not humongous bass quantity.
  • M1 has a slightly recessed mid range which has a neutral tone, SB's mid range while not forward (it is placed at a very slight distance) sounds lush, warm and sweet.
  • M1 has sparkling treble, SB has slightly recessed and not as sparkling treble.
  • SB has a wide sound stage, sounds very spacious. M1 does not.
  • On balance, M1 sounds balanced whereas SB is more euphonic, enjoyable phone.
But the build quality of SB with those heavy bullet shells and not as great strain relief does not leave a great impression about longevity.

Coming to availability, according to this post, Lynx would be getting them around 5th of next month. As of now, the only place to buy it would be GD-Audiobase. A bit of patience is required to deal with Dimitry (not to be confused with Dimitri of Musica Acoustics, Japan) as he took 4-5 days to answer a query left on his site. There have been issues of delays in shipping (strict checking by Russian customs is said to be the reason), RMA and instances of people receiving what they did not order. Guess I am among the last lucky guys to get through unhurt.

Hippo VB is more about sub-bass than mid-bass. Quantity wise, it's not going to compete against many of the other IEMs (like Eterna). But, quality wise, it is one of the cleanest, snappiest, unobtrusive ones.

The good thing is due to the normal mid-bass, mids are never intruded by bass, so it remains neutral than warm. However, mids are recessed & not well bodied, hence not the one for vocal lovers. Treble is also a little "hot" showing off sibilance. Sibilance is however controlled after the foam mod.
