Got a wheel?

cranky

Hi Everybody,
Need some help. After many years of playing racing games using only my keyboard (all I play are racing games), I stumbled first upon F1 2004 (which I ended up throwing away) and now on GTR2 and GT Legends. These games are impossible to play with a keyboard, they need a variable input controller. Or else you're either full throttle or standing on the brakes. I can adjust to the steering, but not throttle or brakes.
After much humming and hawing, I've decided to get myself a wheel. The range starts at about 1500 bucks for a cheapie, all the way up to the Logitech leather steering for 10 times that.
Sooo, how many of you guys are using wheels and what is the feedback (pun not intended) on them? Would be great if you told me:
Brand and/or model:

Cost paid:

Pedal type, with floorboard extension or just a brick:

Force feedback: Yes/no/initial reaction - too heavy or too light, realistic or not?

Happy/not happy with purchase, why?:

Most important: Playing position: On lap, or mounted on desk, and pedal brick slippage tendency?
TIA for your replies.

Really, there are only 4 choices if you want a good wheel, anything else will either get spoilt too soon or have crappy spikey-notchy steering inputs.

  • The new Logitech G25. 3 pedals, H-shifter, wing shifter, steel frame and leather grips. Costs $300.

  • The Logitech Momo. 2 pedals, sequential shifter and wing shifter. Best value for money imo, the only thing it doesn't have from the G25 is an H-shifter and clutch pedal and costs 1/3rd the amount at just Rs.5000.

  • The Logitech DFP. It's a Playstation2 wheel but works perfectly with PC's without any modifications. Not available in India afaik.

The force-feedback is dreamy in all of them. I've personally tried the Momo with the GTR1 demo and I could actually feel the tyres losing grip when pushed too hard, very very good!

You can adjust to steering with the keyboard but not the throttle & brakes?? :S
Steering with a keyboard is a thousand times worse compared to an analog controller. Digital throttle & brakes one can still get used to after some practice.

I play GTR2 and all other sims with a gamepad and have to use digital buttons for the throttle & brakes, it's not that bad after a while (although the experience of driving race sims with a gamepad still sucks).

Saumil....you remember that video of a chap playing Live For Speed on a dual monitor display ??

Which steering wheel and shifter was he using ?? I loved the sound of that shifter clicking into place. No other shifter on the market seems to be so good....

The wheel was a TSW, but the shifter was home-made afaik.

TSW shifters have the same satisfactory click sounds, but they charge $250 for the shifter alone.

The momo has a floorboard with the pedals, which has a carpet grip system. Does this work on a hard tile floor without slipping?

Has anyone actually seen the G25?

I can't adjust to throttle as it's never smooth, always on or always off. The brakes I can manage, but not when you need to do a heel-toe movement on a sweeping corner for the best possible line and speed.

Arcades are perfectly playable and easily beatable with a keyboard (maybe easier than a wheel? IDK) but not good sims, IME. Hence the move. Maybe the Momo then, as long as it doesn't slip on tile floors like most of us have.

nope, I'm talking flesh and blood, like really seen one. Not on the net or in video, I basically want to know if it can be placed on my lap. My comp table is way too high for a bigger wheel - but a smaller wheel like the Momo or the Logi Force may be fine.

I have the same space problem with mounting a wheel. The only way I can think of is to put a smaller desk in front of my comp desk and mount the wheel on that.
Then place this smaller desk on a rug and affix the floor pedals with the carpet grips.

It's manageable once you get used to it. Just don't use something like 100% input sensitivities, use around 25% for throttle and 75% for brakes.
After that it's upto how smoothly you can tap the button repeatedly. Sucks but do-able.

And? Any inputs? The force feedback? The size? The action? Did you end up using the stick shifter or the paddle shifters?

@saumil, I checked and the DFP is not available, nor is the G25 in stock ATM. There is the Momo, and there is the "Formula Feedback" wheel for a little less that is the official NASCAR wheel for PS2 in other countries. The pedals on the second one are quite sad, but the Momo looks like what I'm picking up tomorrow. Does it slip on a tiled floor? Normally a spiking system for carpet grip would mean it would not work ona hard floor and vice versa. Or am I taking the word carpet too literally to mean 'a carpet' as opposed to its architectural meaning of 'floor'?

The carpet grips must be retractable or something for use on a hard floor.

How much does the Momo cost exactly? I am thinking about picking one up as well.
It's the best value for money, I don't find anything extra of real use in the G25 that's worth spending 20k on. The H-shifter is cool, but even real life GT cars use a sequential gearbox :p

What's the difference ??

AFAIK in real cars, H-pattern means the regular way we shift in our cars...

Sequential is only front and back right ?? i.e Forward and backward motion of the lever.

IS it the same in these wheels too?

Yea, sequential is just forward and backward. Forward for down-shift and backward for up-shift.
The Momo has this type.

And H-pattern is our standard style and somewhat fun to do for the grit aspect.
The G25 has this type (with a knob that can be turned to switch it to the sequential style if needed).

Mosts race cars except for Nascar use sequential gearboxes.

@ nikhil what saumil says is right

momo has both sequential and tiptronic shifts both are fun H pattern is something special most of them prefer it

in bangalore the exact price of momo is 4900+tax

the G25 is very precise is suitable for almost all racing games but momo in some games you experience problems it can be corrected. The driving force pro is also a very good wheel espicall the GT4 version really good but its not available here

momo is the best value for money...if you guys want the ultimate thing try the force dynamics it will cost 8lacs

Force Dynamics

@sangram go for the momo without any second thoughts

The quoted price of the Momo is 4950, but that's Prime, I'm sure Gulbir can drop the price a bit and bring it down by a bit, so 4900 sounds about right...

I anyway don't need the shifter, was really looking to use only the paddle shifters so the stick shifter gets disconnected and packed away.

If you break yours, you'll know where to find a brand new unused one!
