So I finally got my new baby and it looks fabulous. Now with the birth of everything new, comes truck load of questions. Since I have always resented Itunes, I guess it's high time I embrace it.

Moving on, being a newbie at this device, I hope you Apple peeps can "patiently" help me out with my queries. So here goes:

1.) How long should the device be charged initially for?
2.) Is it just me or do the default earphones royally Suck? (and yes with a capital 'S') It lacks bass and it sounds like my Nokia earphone.
3.) What's the best and the fastest .mp4 converter for playing videos on this thing?
4.) Please tell me that the Soundmagic PL-30 would sound 10 times better than that piece of shit Apple earphones? I hope it's not the device which is rendering such poor quality audio. :(
5.) Can this device only be charges via USB cable connected to the PC? Where can I get a good external power charger? What would be the cost?
6.) While applying the screen protector I got 2 small air bubbles formed on the screen. How do I get rid of 'em without removing the protector? Is the screen protector really required or is the main screen scratch resistant to some extent?
7.) Are there any easy online guides/YouTube vids available for managing/transferring songs and video via Itunes?
8.) There is an update available for V3.1.2 in Itunes? Should I do that? Is it for free? My current version is v2.2.1.
9.) What is the 'restore' feature and does it restore even if there is a failed JB attempt?

That's it for now. I'll be back with more. ;)

Answer to 8)

Yes update is free.

using blackra1n or using cooked ROM of 3.1.2 ... u can jailbrake .. but after that there are some apps like youtube, maps not working but patch is available for that too :)

1. Discharge the battery completely and charge it till the battery's full. That's what I do with all my gadgetry with rechargeable batteries.

2. LOL they do suck indeed!

3. I use WinAVI converter. Pretty simple and easy to use.

4. It would. Easily. But you've got to agree that there're other players like the Cowon and the iriver which has superior DACs onboard. Nevertheless, the PL30 would be a great addition.

5. Could be charged using external power chargers as well. I think even the PS3 for that matter! I charge my Sansa Clip+ using the PS3 when I game. :P

But some 3rd party Chinese knock-offs may not be compatible and the itouch may respond back showing an error (IIRC since I'd used my friend's ipod 160GB charger and it showed an error!). Use the HCL ones. They're guaranteed to work with them and may cost around 300 INR.

6. Please use a screen protector. At a later stage when you decide to sell it off, your scratch-less screen will fetch you a better resale value. Not to mention, it looks better with the screen protector. Gently use a soft cloth and push it to the corners. Sometimes, it may go on its on.

7. Bugger, learn it by yourself. How hard is it? Toddler!

8. No, it isn't! At least officially.

9. A failed JB attempt means you'll have to restore your firmware. This 'restore' feature you're talking of, does the rolling back to factory settings. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. :P

*Sigh, I miss my touch!*

Congrats on iPod.:)

1) You can charge it fully initially but its not really necessary.

Read more about iPod batteries here.

2) Yeah, the bundled earphones are pretty ordinary.

3) I use Handbrake, works pretty well.

4) Can't say much about the PL30's, but i can certainly say that audio quality will improve considerably with better earphones.

5)Get an adapter like this from ebay.in which plugs into direct wall socket.

6)If the screen protector is good enough, bubbles will go away within 48-72 hours.

I think the screen is absolutely tough and scratch proof unlike the back, i used screen protector on mine for a while but the feel of the naked screen is much better. Zero scratches till date.

7)There are obviously lot of guides you can find for that, and its really simple to understand if you have a fairly well tagged iTunes library.

8)The update costs $10 through iTunes, or you can download though *ahem" sources and and restore the downloaded firmware file in iTunes, its pretty straightforward.

9) Yes, it does restore a fail JB attempt, it is basically used to restore the iPod to default firmware with factory settings.

U can do update by downloading the new firmware using direct link to that file ... from apple itself

why pay 10$ for getting link to file while you can search for the link ... thanks to those big search engine companies :P

Congrats... :hap2:

1.) How long should the device be charged initially for?

-It shows if its fully charged in the device. :)

2.) Is it just me or do the default earphones royally Suck? (and yes with a capital 'S') It lacks bass and it sounds like my Nokia earphone.

-They really really suck !! Buy good ones.

3.) What's the best and the fastest .mp4 converter for playing videos on this thing?

-I personally use Videora. Its quality is SUPERB !!

4.) Please tell me that the Soundmagic PL-30 would sound 10 times better than that piece of shit Apple earphones? I hope it's not the device which is rendering such poor quality audio. :(

-Use any Luxury ones and they will sound hell lot better than those apple earphones.

5.) Can this device only be charges via USB cable connected to the PC?

-No.

6)Where can I get a good external power charger? What would be the cost?

-Local electronic store. Ranges from Rs.225 Local one(with one month warranty, atleast my dealer gives) to the HCL waala for Rs.450 with 1 year warranty.

6.) While applying the screen protector I got 2 small air bubbles formed on the screen. How do I get rid of 'em without removing the protector? Is the screen protector really required or is the main screen scratch resistant to some extent?

-Use scratch resistant ALWAYS. Where are those bubbles? in the middle? then there is little u can do. Get a replacement and tell the shopwaala to do it for you and dont pay unless its perfect.

7.) Are there any easy online guides/YouTube vids available for managing/transferring songs and video via Itunes?

Simple. Drag and drop songs/videos in iTunes and then select them inside iTunes and drag drop them over your iPod name.

8.) There is an update available for V3.1.2 in Itunes? Should I do that? Is it for free? My current version is v2.2.1.

*ahem*

9.) What is the 'restore' feature and does it restore even if there is a failed JB attempt?

It restores to factory settings. Everything formatted and squeaky clean. Yes jailbreak failed attempt also gets solved.

:D

Hopefully all your questions have been answered by our esteemed members. All I can say is - Welcome to the club and enjoy this great piece of gadgetry! :)

Thank you all so much for answering my questions.

@Aladdin: I used Videora and it really works wonders. The quality is amazing. Thanks a lot. ;)

@everyone: Sorry for the late reply. I was busy fiddling and tweaking around with ze Touch. :ohyeah:

I got most of my queries answered. I wanted to know how to flip feature work in Touch? I mean do you just tilt the device and it auto adjusts the screen or do you need to set it up?

The accelerometer senses when the device is rotated and auto adjusts the screen. You do not have to do anything. :)

For the heck of it, THIS is the one used onbaord the itouch, iphone and the new ipod. :P

I just bought mine a month back too.
1.) How long should the device be charged initially for?
Charge it fully initially.

2.) Is it just me or do the default earphones royally Suck? (and yes with a capital 'S') It lacks bass and it sounds like my Nokia earphone.
Yes they suck. Invest in some good iems.

3.) What's the best and the fastest .mp4 converter for playing videos on this thing?
Videora does a good job.

4.) Please tell me that the Soundmagic PL-30 would sound 10 times better than that piece of shit Apple earphones? I hope it's not the device which is rendering such poor quality audio.
The PL-30s would sound much better. I use those and PL-50s for now.

5.) Can this device only be charges via USB cable connected to the PC? Where can I get a good external power charger? What would be the cost?
You can get a 3rd part adapter or an original one. Rs.200-300 onwards.

6.) While applying the screen protector I got 2 small air bubbles formed on the screen. How do I get rid of 'em without removing the protector? Is the screen protector really required or is the main screen scratch resistant to some extent?
If the bubbles are towards the edges, you can try rubbing them out. But, you should keep the film. No harm in having an extra protective layer. Or, you can use this one till the new Targus fingerprint-resistant ones are easily available. They were announced only yesterday for $9.99.

7.) Are there any easy online guides/YouTube vids available for managing/transferring songs and video via Itunes?
Just drag and drop.

8.) There is an update available for V3.1.2 in Itunes? Should I do that? Is it for free? My current version is v2.2.1.
I'm surprised that yours didn't come preinstalled with OS3. Must be the old 8gb stock. Unfortunately, you'll need to shell out $10 to do it officially. But, there are alternatives.

9.) What is the 'restore' feature and does it restore even if there is a failed JB attempt?
Restore is a simple way of reinstalling the OS and bringing the phone back to the factory settings. Infact, you can select your own OS file too. It will restore a failed JB attempt.

Thanks Gannu and vb86.

One more question, how do I stop Itunes from auto syncing the contents to my Touch?

Well, drag n' drop method might suffice for some users but its not a clean solution if you have a sizable iTunes library. So, what you can do is make Smart Playlists based on certain types of media, songs with certain ratings, or songs that match other rules you specify. iTunes can update these playlists automatically and when you connect your iPod, you can just tick the checkbook next to the smart playlists you want to sync, from the relevant tab in the iPod menus, and then hit the sync button.

Creating and managing Smart Playlists is really easy along with being a very convenient and highly efficient way of keeping different media sorted if you have a nicely tagged library.

Check the "Prevent iPod/iPhone from syncing automatically" in devices tab in iTunes preferences.

This worked. Thanks for the tip. :)

I have one concern now. The screen auto adjustment like I mentioned earlier doesn't seem to happen. I tried to do it while playing videos but it won't shift to a vertical view. What could be wrong? :(

EDIT: Googled and this is what I got: http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=889

yes, videos only play in landscape mode and not portrait... but its fun turning the thing around 180 degrees to watch the video smoothly rotate with it :D

Ohz! Didn't know that. :P

So on what things can we expect the rotation to work? I have noticed it in the Album artwork flow while listening to music. What else? Photos?

^Would work for photos - anyway you rotate the screen, the photo would fit to adjust the screen. :)

Where did you purchase your touch? I got one today and it came with 3.1.2 firmware. And yes it is an amazing device.

There is one iPod and iPhone users guide in ilounge.com
get it has lot of good stuff
