Car & Bike GPS in my car.....???

Hi guys, I have heard a lot about Gps , but never tried out this, many times I find it difficult to get the right route during my travel

Problem is that I'm not in a metro city, I want to use this in my hometown palakkad , coimbatore , trichur etc.

Also which system should I go for , want to try this first in my toyota qualis and later want to shift the system to my innova which is expected in three months... So help out pls...
 
I'm not sure about the hardware aspect of it, but let me tell you, you will not regret buying a GPS unit. I had been to Palakkad a couple of months back, and my brother and I had to pick up a relative from the railway station at 1 a.m.. Problem was, both of us were visiting Palakkad like maybe the 2nd time, we were at Nelissery village and we had no idea about the routes. We still took a risk, and I navigated the route using the GPS in my brother's iphone while he drove. Believe me, we made not a single wrong turn. It worked like a charm.

I have heard that Satguide provides excellent GPS units and navigation systems. However, wait for other members to put forth their suggestions.
 
I dont use a dedicated GPS device, but rely on Ovi Maps on my Nokia 5800 while driving, and many times it has pulled me out of tricky by lanes and winding roads, flawlessly. Earlier it would sometimes end up taking me on the wrong side of a one-way, but I guess they seemed to have worked on it as now the routes seem to be updated with the direction changes.
If a dedicated device is what you are looking for, the MapMyIndia device apparently provides the best coverage

Get a cheap GPS phone like the 5230 , load it with Ovi Maps (it rocks) or Google Maps and you're set.
 
^ Only problem with Google Maps is lack of voice based navigation - so you don't have a lady saying "ek kilometer baad u-turn le" :P
 
^^ Not necessary. If you already have all the maps in your phone memory, it won't be needed. If you are using A-GPS, the mobile will connect to internet to get a GPS fix fast. But I believe you can switch A-GPS off and use it without any internet connection.
 
Yeah... Ovi Maps has offline maps that can be loaded on the phone. Then an active GPRS connection is not required unlike Google Maps that needs an active GPRS connection at all times & doesn't have offline maps.
 
You have to follow these steps

Menu>Tools>Connectivity>GPS Data>Option>Positioning Settings>Positioning Methods>Remove Assisted GPS
 
ONLY and ONLY Mapmyindia maps are any good, most of the cities in India covered ( more than 820 ) so wherever you go you will have routes and addresses.

I am and have used gps for many years and that is the best I can tell you.
 
I'm using a Garmin 250w set (had bought this when in Germany). Now installed with satguide India map. I am satisfied with the maps so far. Mostly use it in Mumbai and Nashik. The POI database is also good enough. Has almost all the ATM's, medical stores, petrol stations, etc. even from remote villages. Have tested it in and around Nashik. But, I've heard a lot about mapmyindia maps. Does anyone have a good comparison based review on these 2 map providers?
 
so how should i buy? like the hardware separate and then the software? how much will i have to shell out in total to go for the basic stuff?
 
I think most people buying just the software are those who already have the unit (imported from US or Europe). Otherwise, I don't see any reason why to buy the two separately. The combo of unit + maps from a single provider (like MMI) would turn out to be cheaper than buying separately, no? You'll have to find it out yourself by browsing their site for prices.
 
Guys, don't worry about GPRS usage on map softwares on phones. I use Ovi maps on my Nokia 5800 all the time and the Data usage is actually very very low. It's like .4 rupees for a 20Km trip.
