forget everything and get Galaxy 9400gt 512 ddr3.

contact theitwires.com for this card.

this card should come within 3k.. get it man.

try to stick with ddr3 instead of ddr2. even if u r getting less memory ddr3 in compare to more memory ddr2..go with ddr3 it will certainly make a difference. most of the indian computer hardware seller will try to sell card which they have in stock so dont listened to them.

edit: sparkle also has a 9400gt 512 ddr3 card, sparkle will have better change of getting india in compare to galaxy.

4670 @ 4300k inr is the best gfx card at entry level with very less power requirement - if in case u can stretch ur budget anyway.try to get the card in india with warranty and have peace of mind-running for rma is not a pleasant experience for most of us
good luck.

i wud say get 2nd hand 8600gt which has some warranty left(usually they have 3 year warranty)..post a want to buy thread here..you should get it in around 2k easily..from the reviews i can say it can play almost any game.. probably crysis too at everything lowest...

4670 @ 4.3k is tempting. Is that an itwares quote? Doesn't say so on the web page you directed me to. Neither is the 9400 gt ddr3 mentioned on the page. Have the prices mentioned there been bettered? Please reply.

The unanimous consensus on TE [& elsewhere] is to go for at least a 4670 if any fun from gaming is to be derived. Any thin below that & you're compromising. So I'm starting to think that may be I should wait up & save a bit more... Well, it all depends on how much an iBall graphics tablet would cost. Cos that's my 1st priority & whatever is left over will go towards funding the GPU.

Thanks for the suggestion. Will try out this route as well.

PS: Don't any stores at Lamington Rd. offer 2nd hand GPUs?

start a thread in market and get used 8600gt at 2k or buy new around 3k

from ebay - here

use 500 off coupon - it will cost 3200 shipped .

theitwires has posted in ebay.in;check this link it quote 4675 +100 shipping..if you 15% coupon then u will get discount aroung 400 so total cost will come around 4275+100=4375

dont settle for lower thn this card-it just matter of 1k thn wait n save the money and buy the card.

Alright, thanks so much for the overwhelming response. I'm really confused morer than ever though. I don't know whether I should wait & save up for the 4670 @ ~4.5k or buy a 9500 gt 256 gddr3 @ 3.4k.

Anyway, if I go for either of the above, what sort of PSU would I require? I know only that I have an Xtech [reliable brand?] 400W PSU. As to amp output on the 12v rail? ...etc. I have absolutely no clue. I'll try reading the label tomorrow & post the full specs. I'll also try to read up the sticky thread on PSUs.

Again, my specs are: Intel P4 3.06ghz, Intel motherboard d102ggc2, 512mb ddr2 RAM, Viewsonic VA712 w/ native resolution of 1280x1024, Ati Xpress 200 chipset, Win XP. [I will be increasing the RAM by 1gb, for sure.]

So my concern is whether going for either of the above or equivalent cards would be overkill. If my CPU would limit the performance of the GPU in games, then there is no point in going in for either.

Yet another question is with regard to the VRAM. How does one determine what is the right amount? I've been led to believe that when gaming at 1280x1024 resolutions, 256mb of VRAM is sufficient. Is this true?

I know I might be starting to get on people's nerves now, what with being unable to decide & coming up with so many queries. My sincere apologies. But please bear with me.

I'm off to the market section to see whats there. Will keep you'll posted.

Thanks a lot!

Actually almost all base level cards will come with 512mb RAM, it all depends on the chipset, for eg. on a 8600GT 512mb maybe an overkill..

Regarding the PSU, I have have not heard about the brand, but both 9500gt and 4670 have a low power signature, and it should work on a 400 watts PSU. Though I always suggest in investing in a better PSU, as that solves 1/2 of all stability issues. And lastly get more RAM, 512mb is very less for today's apps.

XFX
7300GT
512MB DDR2
2200 it is a good choice but i believe you must spend 1k more to 8600gt and you can try asking your friend to buy one from US!

getting a card below 5k budjet other than 4670/4650 is complete waste of money.. You wait and better invest on 4670..:)

Thanks for your replies everyone.

The consensus is unanimous. But like I posted earlier, there are 2 concerns - my present CPU & PSU. I won't be going in for a new CPU+Mobo until I learn graphic design well enough to justify the expenditure. & if I have to buy a new PSU, then I have to factor in the cost of one as well.

Well, I'm just worried if my CPU will limit the performance of the GPU. Cos if it will, then why spend more? Is there any 'formula' for this [knowing when the CPU limit will be reached]? [Specs:Intel P4 3.06ghz, Intel motherboard d102ggc2, 512mb ddr2 RAM, Viewsonic VA712 w/ native resolution of 1280x1024, Ati Xpress 200 chipset, Win XP]

& here's what's written on the PSU label: See attached PSU.doc

So if the above two criteria are not going to be a problem, then it's either a-

Palit 9500 gt 256 mb gddr3

or

Palit 4670 512 mb gddr3-

depending upon how much money I've left over after I purchase a graphics tablet.

^ your rig is an old one and i think your PSU will handle 9500GT/4670, but it's always advisable to go with decent PSU.

Well, sure the CPU might limit you on some games which are CPU intensive aswell as those supports physics/AI heavy games. otherwise, P4 is just fine for 4670/9500..:)

Thanks muzux2.

So I guess I'll buy the card 1st & change the PSU later if problems arise. What would be the approx price of a decent PSU?

How reliable a brand is Palit btw? Cos I'm looking at only the Palit cards since they happen to be cheapest.

Here's hoping I get a graphics tablet for cheap [looking at the iBall 8060U & PF 1209] & consequently there's enough left for me to realistically aim for the 4670.

Thanks.

Decent PSU costs between 2.2k - 4k..

CM 460w, corsair CX400, Tagan 500W & Corsair VX450w are the best ones in this range..

Palit is also good brand and has best service support in India. Sapphire is regarded as the most reliable brand for ATi..:)

I think a Cooler Master 390W @1.8K is sufficient for a HD4670 as it is pretty much energy efficient but better go for a CM 460W@2.4K if u can afford it....

Well, the cost just keeps escalating ... it's like I have only so much in my pocket but unexpected traffic keeps the rickshaw meter ticking so the fare ends up more than what I've anticipated ... soon there comes a point where I have to get down & board a bus! :(

Now I have to factor in the cost of a PSU as well! Life is cruel to a PC gamer if you're on a budget!

Any ideas what would be a good card then for my current PSU? [14A on +12v : 400W]

As always your replies are much appreciated.
