Well, the cost just keeps escalating ... it's like I have only so much in my pocket but unexpected traffic keeps the rickshaw meter ticking so the fare ends up more than what I've anticipated ... soon there comes a point where I have to get down & board a bus! :(

Now I have to factor in the cost of a PSU as well! Life is cruel to a PC gamer if you're on a budget!

Any ideas what would be a good card then for my current PSU? [14A on +12v : 400W]

As always your replies are much appreciated.
well, i think your Psu will handle 4670, the price of the Palit 4670 has come down to 4.2k(suggested by other members)..:)

too much of maths, too much of calculation, too much of .........errrr.

the clear picture is :

1. you need to buy either 9500gt or 4670 or an used one of the same which will cost u 3.5 to 4.2 k
2. descent psu for ur current setup - 1.9 to 2.4k
3. graphics tablet- 3.5 to 4k

so total cost 8.9 to 10.6k
you can play around within this budget if you can ..if not then depending on your requirement go ahead step by step buying.
if you are bargaining out of the above mentioned scope you are just wasting your time .
sorry for being harsh but this is the reality
Code:
pc gaming(playing recent released games) is a luxury dude now a days

y don't u get an HD4670 512MB GDDR3, sells for Rs. 4400 now.

And it can play almost all games above medium to high settings and some with 2xAA as well.

Gee, thanks for your replies, you guys. If my current PSU can handle the 4670, then I'll wait up & save! If not, then it'll take too long, so might as well buy another card for the interim.

Is there any harm in trying out the card 1st? I've read that there's a chance the parts may get fried, if the PSU is not up to snuff. Would definitely not want that to happen!

I admit there's just too many ifs & buts here, but I'm in uncharted territory [for me] & therefore being so apprehensive [besides being on a budget].

Thanks!

^ there was indeed an harm, if your system would have been of today's mid or high end. Since, its a old P4 based, you will be able to run 4670. Lets wait for more replies on this. Wait for Bikey or Sorceror replies, they will help you better in this regard..:)

The chances of a gpu getting harmed by a faulty PSU, is very low (although you cant rule out the possibility). Most of the GPU's are made keeping the developed markets in mind, where even a no brand PSU, will perform decently (and they dont overrate their wattages like Indian PSU's, atleast majority of them).

There is a chance of the PSU getting spoilt, as one or more capacitors start over-burning, now whether if that will take a couple of other components is anybody's guess. If it was me, I would first buy a decent PSU, and then think of buying a graphics card. What most newbies out here dont seem to comprehend is, that modern day GPU's consume more then other components put together.

^^ Is it, I guess I must be mistaken. I have lost a couple of bad PSU's, but touchwood they havent taken any other components with it.

As I said, its always recommended that you buy a good quality PSU, before budgeting on other components.

Just came across this chart on another forum. It shows the power drawn by the GPU only [in Watts] - http://mark.zoomcities.com/images/gfx/GFXpowerchartby3d.png

Going by this a 4670 should draw about 5A-6A on the 12V rail [64W/12V]. If that's the case, then my PSU should be good to go. For the 9500 GT, it'll require 4A-5A as per the chart. However, according to this BFG webpage, http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr951024gte.aspx, {see the system requirements on the detailed specs tab} the 9500 GT requires 18A [with a Core2Duo processor].

So either the chart's way off or the BFG specs are highly over-estimated. But either way, if BFG requires 18A on the 12V rail, & mine is 14A, then am I good to go or is it cutting it a bit too close? [That spec is under peak load & for a C2D right?]

Thanks!
