Hello,
My gpu is running at 72C on desktop, and 95c while gaming. The gpu is very stable, but something seems to be wrong with the cooling system.
Im trying to get hold of some of the cooling paste, but I couldnt find it in any local shops.
Last I checked was that the cards could run upto 125C before the core would slow down, so I think 72C is not very bad.
Any thoughts?

which card do you have i think even though 95degrees is not too bad , but its still kinda warm....try using arctic silver

I have an FX5200 in a very badly ventilated cabinet (~silent music rig) that runs at 85 degrees heatsink temp (so internal temp ~105 degrees) all day. The card has been with me for a year and a half running like this, and hasn't blown up yet, so I think you're fine.

My card is xfx 6800XT agp version.
The problem is with the fan bearings, they have got spoilt and weakened.
It is becasue we had carpenters in our house last week, and they were working a lot so I think the saw dust has enered the ball bearings and made it week. I removed the head sink, and it was almost like someone had mixed the dust with gum and stuck it on the inside of the fan and cooling plates. I cleaned it as much as I could and put it back, but the temps are quite high. Also, my fan stops rotating sometimes. Usually when I start it in the morning the fan does not come on, I have to tap it gently and then it begins to rotate and stays on for the rest of the day.
I have placed one of my bigger system fans blowing air right into the agp fan, that is helping a bit.

Its good to know I can continue using this card, becasue this card still suprisingly performs quite well even with the latest games.

disassemble and clean the fans once. If the fans are not spinning properly, then those temperatures are understandable. Also 90+ is not a safe temperature on the 6800 series.

If the fan is damaged internally then you will have to replace it. But unfortunately they are not usually available. One thing you can do is just remove the top logo plate/ fan cover on the card, get yourself 2 fan slot cooler and install it in the slot below the GPU.

He could use an old P3 cooler tied through the 2 slot pins using cable ties. That's way overkill for the cards mostly, but it does work.

It's very important that you never, never try to use your PC in such an environment. Even after work is complete, it takes 3-4 days for the dust to be removed.
Sometime ago, my CD writer stopped working after some work was done in my uncle's place where I used to stay at.

The next time workers came, I removed every bit of my belongings to my aunt's place(PC included) except for my washing m/c, some buckets and my drinking water bottles (which I'd placed inside the washing m/c :P for safety). When I returned 2 weeks later, they'd mixed their frigging cement in my buckets, used my bottles to fill their drinking water and even stole half of them and put a big scratch on the side of my washing m/c.

True. The card would behave funny and games stutter when temperature crossed 90C on my 130nm based 6800GT.

Fortunately, after cleaning out a huge amount of dust followed with some AS5application, temps rarely crossed 80C.

Thanks for your replies guys, its much appreciated.
I realized it too late, I would leave my comp on all day while the carpenters were working. It has broken my fan.
Right here I cant even get hold of artic silver to apply on the gpu, and tomorrow is a public holiday here too. I have once again removed the 6800xt and put back the fx5200. I've had enough with the high temps and the noisy fan.
Earlier today I tried putting a few drops of oil in the fan, and I could see that after a while the oil was collecting thick layers of dust which was coming outwards due to the spinning. Obviously, thers tons of dust and saw dust in the ball bearings which is causing it to make lot of noise.
But still the temps are crossing 90C.
I should have shut down my pc and covered it up until the work was done, I didnt realize it then.

Hello Again guys,
Sorry, but I dont understand anything of what you said regarding AS5 application or about "P3 cooler tied through the 2 slot pins using cable ties".
All I know is how to remove the heat sink. I was unable to even remove the top plate covering the screw because I dont have a screw driver that is small enough to remove the plate. If I could remove the plate I would be able to clean the fan better.
I asked the local shop for artic silver, and he said its only available if I buy a full cooler system.
Is there anyone from goa here?

How do you guys tell what temperature your GPU is running at?

by concurruntly running some GPU monitoring software eg. nvtemplogger, everest ultimate edition, rivatuner etc.

I am putting a 8600GT in a stock compaq dektop. So it's not hopped up on fans or anything - just one on the processor, and one for the whole chassis.

At what temperature should the GPU read for me to be worried about it? (Btw my graphics card has some major heatsinks and a fan on it as well)

No, I don't know the first thing about over-clocking, and wouldn't want to get into it - too intimidating!! Plus being a console-gamer, and having the tendency to obsess about how much you can tinker with hardware, I'd rather keep it about the games! :)

75 degrees it is!

Thanks for your advice guys,
Today morning I took it to a good hardwre dealer, and I purchased artic silver 5 of Rs.350/- from him. I requested him to apply it on my gpu, he opened it up and cleaned my fan and applied the paste and now the temperatures are back to 58C and the fan is as silent as it was when brand new.

PersonallyI didnt even have the screw drivers to open up the plate of the card nor did I even have any idea where to get the cooling paste from.
Thanks for your advice and Im glad Ive got this card back in working condition again.
Thanks guys,
Sarosh.
