hey people,

The new GPU's are hitting the market, and my upgrade itch has started, the worse part i hardly get any time to game, if at all any on the weekends all i play is my good old tf2 at max resolution, and my existing card the 4870 512mb handles it with ease, just like most of the other games that I play.

But my comp is on 24x7 dloading stuff, and I would like a more power efficient GPU both in terms of idle power consumption and heat compared to my existing one, so now my dilemma

1) GTX 260 (216 Core) - total VFM and suits most of my requirements.

2) GTX275 - for some reason I am inclined towards this one, wanna try out Nvidia so bad this time

3) ATI 4890 - Robo had posted some deal where you could get this card for like $200, which is very very hard to resist.

Edit 4) ATI 4870 1GB with heat pipe cooling

Pls note- I will be getting this card from the US, one of my friend will be bringing it down.

Pls suggest! TIA.

I'd go for GTX260, great vfm + its nvidia.

What OS do you use? cuz nvidia is suppose to have good driver support for win7.

I am using Win Xp 64 bit, just checked out the scores of the GTX 260 (216) seemed quite disappointing in the AnandTech review! For some reason in that review at my monitors resolution the 4890 is the the best option, but its idle power consumption is pretty high.

I will also suggest u to go for Gtx 260 216 and oc it to hell..currently using one and i love it.

P.S : robo! u upgrade maniac :bleh:

260 is not upgrade for U, U will hardly feel any differance. U can see our Crysis benchmark thread. 4890 is good VFM, 199$ after coupon ? yeah idle consumption is sad.

@OP

Didn't notice u had the 4870 with you. Upgrading to a 1gb version as u mentioned or a 260 is meaningless. Get a 4890/275..considering the price and the place ur gonna buy , 4890 is the perfect option for you. :)

GTX 260 is way to go ...........good VFM.

if u talk abt. getting 4890 for cheap suing coupon then, it's also a good VFM.

as u are going to use it in 24*7 download rig, power consumption should be lower. this where GTX260 would come into play, it has lower power consumption.(this much power consumption for download rig is very high)

EDIT: i missed ur siggy. it says u have 4870. stick to it, there will not be much performace diffrence with upgrade to either 4870 or GTX270.

Jasku - on a unrelated note, why don't u get (a netbook or a Atom combo with 80+ PSU) and use it as a D/L rig.
u don't need to keep the gaming rig ON always
4870 is a top card which u could retain for some more time

all the above cards are not worthy upgrades to 4870 512mb so stick to it....

Your siggy says you are on a P5Q delux, so another possible option is to get another 4870 and crossfire them. Just reboot and disable the secondary card when you are downloading.

I know the second PCI-E slot is just 8x, but I am pretty sure you would get better performance than any of the other options you've thought of. Besides, 512MB 4870s are dirt cheap now. :]

I just noticed that myself, if you have a 4870 then the GTX 260 really isn't much of an upgrade, always upgrade atleast 2 tiers upwards in performance as compared to your existing GPU, which would be GTX 275/HD 4890 or above.
PS: Do you really need to upgrade right now?

man..you guys have totally confused me....upgrade not to upgrade!.. nice idea spectre...but having 2 comps extra space i know its small..but its just the extra hassle! ...ok the 4890 for $200 is not working...so its a straight up toss between the gtx 275 and the 4890, now there is news that 4890x2 is gonna be out...so do u think wait for it to launch, and there might be price drop for the rest of the cards?!!!

If i were you, i'd rather settle with present card and wait for DX 11 card which is goona launch in Q4 2009, that would be the worth upgrade from 10/10.1..:)

i hope 4870 512MB on Dell 24" won't dissappoint you till Q4..

Yes, 100 pc true, that's what I am gonna do. You will end up upgrading anyways after Dx11, till then 4870 will last you good.

But if you must must have an upgrade, go for 4870 CF - It won't burn a hole in your pocket + It will give better performance than any of the aforementioned cards in singular.

Hey guys.
Graphic cards rates.
saphire hd 4890 for rs16800.

My dad is an importer so im getting it very cheap, I myself a gamer, I'm putting these rates for the fellow gaming community in India, as we all know graphics cars are priced very high in India. I live in Delhi too, I got ecs8800gtx for just rs 24000 whi8le the card was priced at 34000 in India straight 10000 saving.
Anyways I thought maybe if i could help someone save some money.

I'm going to get saphire 4850x2 or saphire 4870, will update price for 4850x2 2gb soon, will probably be below rs15000-16000 and it beats gtx280 easily.

My email address vegeta_evilprince@yahoo.com.
