I am looking at upgrading my ancient 7600GS with something better. I am not into hardcore gaming but i do play that occasional NFS game. I need the following features

1. Must fit on my G31MS2L mobo. Do the double slot card fit on this board? I don't have any additional cards in there.

2. I am planning to upgrade to a 22" Dell or Benq in near future. I should be able to watch movies in at least 720P. I don't think that I'd appreciate FullHD from a distance of 9 feet on these monitors. My eyesight is also not great enough to discern any subtleties between 720 & 1080

3. I am looking at a value card - less than 7K (strictly)

4. I have a 400W VIP Gold PSU which I may not upgrade right away. My PSU should be able to handle this card. I have a E7300/G31/4Gb RAM with no extra cards. The cabinet has very less ventilation.

5. I'd prefer to stick with nVidia for ease of driver installation.

EDIT: Open for ATI too!

TIA

HD 4670 @ ~5k

Your only option, if you consider your needs. Doesn't need a PSU upgrade(no external power needed as well), less that 7k, will work well even when you upgrade to your 22 incher and will fit your motherboard.

Remove this thought from your head, no such thing, driver installation on both is pretty much the same. The 4670 is the only card that will perform to your expectations and its performance/per watt consumption ratio is unmatched. If you want to still stick to NVIDIA, you'll either have to get a PSU upgrade, or buy a strictly inferior card at roughly the same price or more

I would suggest that you get a better psu first. and then go about getting a decent gfx card.

But right now that is not the requirement i.e. i am not having any power hungry cards installed. Do you still feel that once I get the GPU i'd need to upgrade my PSU - no matter what?

i would be safe rather than sorry.

Unless that is, you are getting yourself a 4670. In which case you just might be alright.

The irony of the situation is that if i go for the 4670 - i'd have money left over for upgrading the PSU!

get that for now.. you can upgrade your gfx again some other time.

or else simply sit tight and save another 1k or 2..

Upgrading the PSU will be for better for you only.

Get the VX 450W & HD 4670 via ebay for around 8k or so....1k more than your budget but will be balanced and the PSU will serve u good for any future upgrades :)

Thanks for the advice - making a lot of sense actually

But can someone please confirm whether the double slot card fits into the puny little G31MS2L?

why not sell your current VIP gold at about 700-800 and then pitch for a FSP Bluestorm II (about 3K in pune), dunno bout other places.
Or bluestorm (about 2.5).

And get a 4670 or whatever card suits ur remaining budget.

Just asking the gurus...hws the 3870 Now as a "VALUE" card? i mean it shld be cheap these days and perfo shld be comparable to a 9600gt...:)

Good card, on par with the 4670(i still prefer the latter) but more power hungry and runs hotter.
Therefore 4670 wins by default, although at 1k less, i do agree that it is a good deal :)

just saw the charts at toms/// for a person whose gaming at 1280 or even 1600 X 12 this is simply an awesome card...also read on the thread for lamington road that its for 4k bucks!!!
