ok it seems that 8800gt k.o. will cost 11k and 2.5k-3.5k for PSU
That should be fine.

SMC & KMD?

I am in Delhi, India.

Here 8800GT 512 k.o. comes for 12-13k

I don't know if ati 4850 is even available here and even if it is then it will surely be costlier than this.

I will prefer Nvidia over Ati. Whats the use of buying if I would not even use it.

My needs:

Programming, Web designing, Image editing (mid-level), gaming (not hardcore) and HDs movie

I just want good 3D environment and fast enough environment.

It doesn't matter to me if the ati will give me more fps than nvidia.

Now according to my condition (needs & place - India) I think I should go for 8800GT 512 k.o for 12-13k

What say?

Why are you adamant on Nvidia? Right now, ATI is offering better value so grab that.

Palit 4850 has been launched at 11.5K and it should be available in Delhi. This card will KNOCKOUT any 8800GT or 9800GTX you can bring to face it.

Your budget is around 13K for GFX. Get a 4850+get an aftermarket cooler (Delhi is hot) and have fun. This will beat any card that Nvidia offers for less than 20K.

And you like to watch movies. Right? Everyone knows that ATI's cards have better out-of-box support for H.264 and VC-1. They can pass audio over HDMI and with 48XX has started to support colour+edge enhancement.

Still want 8800GT... well, all the best

PS: Just noted that you wrote won't use the GFX power of cards like 4850 or 8800GT! Then, why are blowing up 12K. Get a 8600GT for around 4K and spend 8K on partying with your friends. Your friends will bless you!

Nvidia cards have greater support for linux and games (Nvidia - the way its meant to be played) and probably I won't take the risk of buying a ATI and ending up in a problem as I will be taking this rig to my hostel.
If I end up with issues on ATI then I would waste time on it and that defeats the sole purpose of my upgradation.

I think I have made my choice : 8800GT 512MB DDR3 K.O.
Thanks a lot to everybody for helping me and explaining things to me. :hap2:

now thats just lame....

who do you think will help u if your nvidia card goes wrong??

and regarding issues, nvidia has more than ati :)

if you had already decided and are so stubborn, why create the thread in the first place...

and being in college, trust me you are NOT gonna use linux lol.....not with all those games running so well on windows :)

what everyone recommended ati 4850 is best card bang for buck 8800 gt is out dated obstinate they beat 9800 gtx at many benmark or u can stick 8600 gt wihout psu u might save cash

If you have decided, then why the hell you opened a thread seeking advice on GFX cards...

I know, telling you something is futile but still becoz you are at TE, it's better if you can inform yourself a little bit more. You can begin from here:

Linux and AMD

In the January issue of Linux+DVD magazine I had shared my views with how AMD has went from being viewed as a company to hate within the Linux ecosystem to one that Linux users adore. Just two years ago the level of their Linux support wasn't very bright and many considered them to be in a laughable state with hordes of problems -- just go back to the ATI Redblog for some views from that point in ATI's history. AMD has kept to their word on improving their Linux support and this holds even more true with today's announcements.

While AMD won't simply eliminate their proprietary driver or provide it under a free software license due to reasons we've mentioned before, they are setting an example for other companies to follow with how to nurture Linux and provide first-rate support for all of their customers: those wanting a pure open-source solution that's easy to setup/use and then an option for those wanting a high-performance feature-rich driver....

Going forward, AMD representatives have expressed confidence that these same-day efforts should continue from now on. What have been their motivations behind their growing love within Linux? AMD representatives have shared that it just "made sense" and they have been valuing the feedback of their Linux customers (cheers!). AMD has now established itself as one of the premiere hardware vendors supporting the Linux operating system and one with an even brighter future ahead.

And now for TWIMTBP Games and Radeons on a 22" monitor (1600X1200)

COD 4

HD4850 gets 66 FPS

8800GT gets 52 FPS

Company of Heroes

HD4850 gets 223 FPS

8800GT gets 179 FPS

Crysis

HD4850 gets 27 FPS

8800GT gets 25 FPS

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

HD4850 gets 85 FPS

8800GT gets 66 FPS

Unreal Tournament 3

HD4850 gets 106 FPS

8800GT gets 95 FPS

And you still want 8800GT, even when 4850 is not only cheaper but also faster.

You are insane dude going for a 8800gt now. Seriously, why did you even make the thread? Your not listening to anyone's advice....

@ morgoth ... he stated at 1st post that he is already inclined for 88GT and not asking for anything better in performance within price but his actual need for creating this thread is to know 2 question
1. Will my system bottleneck graphics card performance?
2. How much loss due to my mobo supporting pcie16x 1.0?

but as the thread goes it seems he is pressurized to go for 4850 instead of 88GT as 4850 is WIN for both price and performance...

but he was not started the thread to ask for a better GFX... its just my thought for him....

Oh, in that case I don't think I can be of much help. I never understand how a CPU can bottleneck can GPU.

After all, if relative power is concerned for a 2Ghz Core 2Duo, 8600 GT should be the best card. But then 8600GT won't allow anyone to seriously game above 1024X768.

On the other hand - put the bottleneck issue aside - 8800GT even if it loses a few FPS due to a weak processor will provide quite-playable FPS and paired with the same CPU, 9800GTX or for that matter 4850 will provide even better experience.

Yes, for optimal performance there ought to be a balanced config but if relative power is the criteria every CPU is a bottleneck for any mid-end dual-card setting or high-end cards like GTX280, GTX260 and HD4850.

As for the PCIe question, pcie16x 1.0 is more than enough for a single card even if it is GTX280.

But still a 8800 GT over HD 4850...

basically its that the cpu puts a sort of frame limiter...when you see a review of graphics cards and see that 3-4 cards all have the same frame rate(especially at lower res.) it means the cpu is a bottleneck

cpu heavy games like world in conflict will give low fps on most systems more because of the cpu than the gpu
