hi guys
my os is xp home sp2. recently i have started experiencing some wierd problems in my computer, namely,

after some time, my ie6 stops working, setting for temp. internet files shows zero and it can not be increased beyond 10.the space showing its locatiion in computer also becomes vacant.

all the restore points have vanished.

all the images, descriptions, text etc disappears in ' windows' "help & support" programe.

sometime back i have uinstalled 'avast4"from my machine but every time i start my machine, i get an error message.i tried to remove its folder from 'programe files' i get an unable to message

obviously some files in os are corrupted. if i try to reinstall the os all the data will be lost.

my question is ,can the problem be addressed by using 'recovery console. 'if so will some kind soul tell me in detail how to go about it.thanx guys

looks like you have screwed with ur OS a lot or you dont have Legit copy of XP.. hope u have not reset ur pc in the middle of xp load or when xp is working on some program. if ur os is installed on C:\ transfer all the backup on D:\ or other drive. you can now format C:\ and reinstall and restore ur backup. hope this helps. you can also reasign my documents target by right clicking on my domuments properties. i have my documents targetted to D:\Backup and if in emergency if i have to format, i dont lose my documents and i assign the path in D:\ to recover my documents.
Also check for any spywares or adwares cause most of the problems are caused by them.

for spywares, download SPYBOT

Adwares-Ad Aware

Instead of trying the windows recovery tool, you can give these things a try:

1. Install utility like Tuneup utilities 2007 from here TuneUp Software International - Home Page
and run utilities like system optimizer, registry defrag etc

2. Install a anti-spyware and scan for any spywares. You can try this one The home of Spybot-S&D!, Before scanning, install its updates as well.

3. Install a good anti virus such as kaspersky or NOD32 and run a complete system scan.

If these didn't work, only then just back up your data required fro you in the OS directory(generally C) in some other directory and install XP. Actually if you use upgrade instead of clean XP installation installation, which you get to choose during starting of ins XP, no data will be destroyed. You can also try that. Tell how it went.
:)

Clean install is the best go .. save time .. and save more time for future .. i never had good experience restoring windows or re installing windows.

thanx to everybody who have been kind enough to ogger suggestions.majority is in favour of clran install.i think i will go for that. thanx once again
