Linux H/W Accelerated HD Playback - nvidia

A small question here, I have already installed VDPAU and it's running fine on my kubuntu. Does VDPAU completely take the decoding process off the CPU? When I play an HD movie, there is still some amount of processor being used, but it is considerably less than without VDPAU. But in Windows, using dxva completely leaves the CPU almost idle.

my results were

Without hw decoding : cpu usage was as high 40-50%.

After hw decoding:1% cpu:hap2:

Well if its the same file in both windows and linux then you need to check other things as well. On my C2D T6670 even with full hd files the cpu usage never peaks 5-6% with cpu running at 1.2Ghz

I have found for some audio codes like ac3 with certain files the usage shoots up to 25% @ 1.2ghz. I don't have windows installed in any on my machines to do a comparison so never bothered.

Check for the codecs used for audio decoding and also if you are running latest drivers. The newer drivers are good in vdpau improvements like allowing multiple decoding different files at once.

I hope when comparing with linux the cpu is not downclocked by powersave where as its running full speed in windows

I'm testing the same file in Windows and Linux.

While using dxva in Windows, the CPU usage is only 1-2%.

But in Linux, the CPU usage is around 15-20%. Without VDPAU its around 50%.

I'm using the latest nvidia drivers. I'll see what codecs are being used.
