had a major accident

Wow take care bro! Glad you are okay. After reading your post memories of a similar incident that happened to me came rushing back to my mind.

Depends on the state - most are 70. Some are 80. Few parts are 90. Almost all of Europe other than Britain is 80. Britain is 50-70 depending on the highway. The most sensible speed to drive at depends on the car itself and also its state of tyres, brakes and general mechanical wear. Driving a Maruti 800 at 100kph is risky . while driving a BMW M3 at 150kph is definitely not risky.

Europe, Yes..

US, No

The max Interstate speed I have personally seen is 70 (110 km)

Max i have heard is 80 (128)

An inner city freeway in fact will have far lower speed limits

Anyway, the point being that given the state of traffic unruliness (incl your co-habitants on the road) in India, 100 + is invitation for trouble regardless of the car you are driving

In this case it was a dog so you still have a choice of running it over (although I probably will not)...but it wouldn't be surprising to suddenly spot a 3 year old kid dart across the road on a seemingly empty highway..what would one do then?

Drive slowly - 140 ka speed is a no-no wer you drove and do wear your seatbelts....Thank God you and ya friends are safe.

montana has no speed limit. many freeways inside the city in the us have a limit of 70-75. speed limit in west texas is 85 but everyone still drives at 90-95 without getting caught. you can easily touch 100+ (160km/h) in new mexico, arizona, utah and other desert stretches of road.

@Czar: You'd have to stop... no real choice. However you do have to put into account that the braking distance from 100 of a D segmenter with all round discs is probably half of a hatchback such as a zen or similar.

So even if the car is at a higher speed, it can stop. There's a reason why powerful cars have bigger brakes... since the need to stop quickly is probably more than the need to accelerate quickly. I have no qualms in cruising at 130-140 in my car because I know I can stop in the blink of an eye. However give me a M800/Wagon R or similar and I'd be scared to go past 80 in it. The wagon R especially - its ridiculous in crosswinds.

@Halo_3: Actually czar is right... now the maximum speed limit is 80. Even 3 years ago, I remember seeing 90mph limits on I90 in Washington at places. No longer the case I guess. Inside the city its mostly 60 now.

So he ain't got a better way to teach people life lessons? I thought he was all powerful. Seems like he has the brain of a regular "threat-to-teach-kids" human being.

And what about the people who die in car accidents? What did they ever do? Sinned in their past lives? Is god so petty that he can't forgive people? How's he all powerful then? Doesn't that make him a bitter prick?

Maybe because he thinks humans come far below in his state of affairs> He might be like" Humans, what makes you more superior to a bacteria?" :)

On topic nice to know you are safe, 140kmph is fast, but then almost all people will try to take their car to limits when one sees an open road. Palm beach road in Navi Mumbai is good eg. never seen an open stretch like that in India.. No wonder its an accident prone zone..

this reminds me of the time i was in bangalore.. i had gone there a few months back for an exhibition at the bangalore international exhibition centre. we used to drive up and down nice road everyday in a safari given by the association. our driver also used to drive at 120. now hearing about your incident makes it sound quite scary. i guess the tempation is always there to drive fast on open roads. i drive to noida everyday for work and yes speeding on the toll bridge is very tempting.

before giving in to the temptation, do remember the fact that the DND flyway is possibly the most accident prone stretch in all of NCR

you swerved to avoid hitting the dog?

the only reason I would swerve to avoid it would be to prevent it from damaging my car. A dog in the middle of the road deserves to die. Imho careless humans too, but thats another matter..

All well if it ends well.

I am regular @ Pune Mum Express highway. I always push luck max 100-110.

I cross 150-200 only in NFS :-)

If somebody wants to drive fast, he should take a day off and go in for a track day. Its safe and you get to learn loads of things(Few mentioned by Chaos here).

Also one should ALWAYS stick to safe speed limits. There is nothing like once in a while.

I disagree,

While DND flyway has witnessed quite a few accidents. Nothing beats the Gr.Noida expressway. Its a 25KM+ stretch of an eight lane wide road with just 2 interceptions. No speed breakers. And almost every car passes at an speed of 80+KMph. I have personally seen the worst of the road accidents on the road.

Infact my dad carried two school kids in his car when they hit a tractor from behind and they were on a bike. One of them died as soon as she reached hospital. Can't forget that day. The kids on the bike were at 100+ speeds and had bunked thier school.

good you are safe.

Cold heart beech.

Dude I'm a Dog lover and I have 3 dogs. But if I cannot avoid it, I'd rather run over a stray than swerve to a side. Human life is more important than a Dog's life. Be glad that one of our good members [+his 4 friends] lived to see an another day. I feel sad whenever I read about an another young life snuffed due to rash & negligent driving these days.

I completely agree to that!:hap2:

except that careless human thing! :P :S

We would make a discussion out of each and every incident, won't we. :P
Good pointers mr.chaos
