Surprised to see no thread on Handheld Gaming Devices
I am looking to buy a retro or a device that can play retro as well as newer games (not latest gen but maybe 10 or 20 years back ones)

Saw a few on https://www.electroniksindia.com/. They come loaded with games but can we install other games or not on it ?
These are in the upto 10K range but ignoring the really expensive ones like ROG Ally & Claw, are there some decent options in 10K + range?

How does old ps vita sound? if you can source one they have large support of games emulator (I specifically choose pc vita because there are good amount of community built around it) also if you have a good phone maybe you can emulate with that itself by just attaching a mobile controller too :)

Why don't you buy Nintendo switch.
If you modify it...you can download and play some really old games like Bomberman, contra etc.
Plus latest newer games.

Switch lite is really easy to carry and reliable.

May devices from these Chinese may have quality issues. But Nintendo is very solid.

Most retro games are being remastered also in form of Atari collection etc.

Beside Nintendo itself has solid line up

You be killing two birds with one stone or desi language ordering Biryani and getting Gajar ka Halwa free if you go for Nintendo Switch.

I Would rather buy something new than 2nd hand at the moment just to test the waters and then invest in an expensive machine

Yes I am considering the switch

So these chinese devices are a miss or hot or good enough to start with retro games ? I might buy one and then go from there
Just wanted to know if any other options are there in between 10 and 20K

An unlocked android with a flagship chip (something like 1+ 7T, older the better to control cost) and a wireless controller (see Gamesir Galileo or Kishi) works pretty well if you are just into retro games and emulation. I often see my cousin brother playing emulated games on his old POCO phone. That thing manages to even emulate older Windows titles using Winlator. Emulation upto PS2 is a breeze on Android.

They are good enough to start if you can take little chances with Chinese quality( not saying they are going to fail.. its just bit of a luck needed)

The reason I was recommending Switch is you can play many old games in remastered form with more beautiful graphics plus ofcourse having a chance to play great switch games itself.

I personally downloaded Bomberman old version .

And they work fine on switch.

It's just that You wouldn't have to invest twice.
Having said the above Chinese retro consoles is good enough to start .

We now have SteamOS to expand beyond Steam Deck with the newly announced Lenovo Legion Go S - Powered by SteamOS.
We may take time to get it in India because it was just announced in CES 2025 yesterday though

the RG35XX H looks like a good option. Will research into it
If you liked this, check out the Retro Game Corps channel on YouTube for other recommendations. There are many devices like this in various form factors, and some can even run up to PS2/Gamecube (most games), although they'd be expensive and closer to 15K-20K (like the Retroid pocket line).

Also, a website like mx2games or elektroniksindia (I've used the former, not the latter) will have better deals on such devices than Amazon, where sellers usually charge way more. I've also ordered from Mechdiy and was lucky enough to not get charged any customs duties, but that's a gamble.
