Spent a better part of the afternoon in the mobile section of HyperCity today. And here's what I bring with me:
1. Motorola Droid RAZR
Design: I loved the new industrial design, the slim profile is excellent, but... yes there's a but. Just to achieve the "Slimmest Phone" tag, Moto ended with an uneven design, which just doesn't look satisfying if you stare at it for more than a few seconds, yes, the front is sexy, back is plain and good, side ways, it's slim at first glanc, then the top part is bulged in a not so Nokia N8 good-looking way. Rest everything's great.
UI: Lovely interface, with a BIG BIG COMPLAINT from my side. It was FRIGGIN' LAGGY!. Yes, it lagged in places, while scrolling through the different Homescreens, or just the menu. It happened at first, didn't happen again for a while, and then again, THERE IT IS. For a Rs. 33,990 phone, it is completely NOT ACCEPTABLE! However, overall Moto's UI is pretty cool.
The lock screen was huggable.
The drop down notifications panel is extremely basic, nothing like the HTC's sense.
BASICS:
Browser was instantly loaded, so were all other apps, messaging was great, keyboard in portrait qwerty was a joy to use, extremely responsive screen.
Camera: The camera interface was minimal and did the job, although I didn't get the preview for the previous pics clicked after I took a photo. Pics took about 1 second to get clicked, so not the fastest I guess. However, the quality was decent, with text very readable of a shot taken from a half feet distance.
2. Moto Defy+
Design: Absolutely the Moto Defy, which is nothing short of pretty, a bit heavy I would say considering humongous devices tend to be extremely light weight but I guess, it is sturdy, so forgiven. Compact and pretty.
UI: A step down from the Razr's UI, but mostly the same. I guess an upgrade from the Defy's 2.1/2.2 interface. Live wallpaper ran well, but afterwards, apps didn't. Infact, one game, some Space something, hanged, I mean it literally hanged. I could lock the phone and unlock to lock screen(laggy) but it returns me to the FROZEN game's UI, which, no matter what I did, wouldn't go. I couldn't remove the battery there
Basics: I managed to hang the app before I got there. Here, Nokia's middle button long press Task Manager would have shined.
Camera: Nothing special, no HD video recording is a bummer.
3. Motorola FireXT
Design: Ugly
UI: Bland and laggy. Live wallpaper made it worse. Even w/o live wallpaper, and ZERO widgets, scrolling through Homescreens was laggy.
Basics: Typing was okayish, with wrong inputs here and there, and delayed response once in a few touches.
Camera: Horrible
4. Sony Neo V
Design: Borrows heavily from the Xperia Arc, which to say, is lovely. Nothing tooo slim, light, but with enough weight to have a feel in my hand.
UI: I really liked Timescape, the Apps menu, really liked it. Fluidity was top notch. Scrolled through extra fast to check, good job on the software Sony. All apps opened instantly. I opened about 1 new app every 1.5 seconds to check.
Basics: Typing on the 3.7" screen was comfortable, didn't check the landscape keypad though.
Camera: Quality, good. Flash, really BRIGHT. Interface, once the photo is clicked, the host of other options pop up, you get a small thumb of upto 4(or 5?) previously clicked pics, which was really good. Although, when you just start the camera app, there's nothing, just the entire scren filled by the cam's view. Touching the screen took a pic, I was thinking touch to focus. Didn't check more.
5. Nokia 701
Design: Borrows heavily from the C7 design, which, needless to say, it classy.
UI: New Symbian Belle UI is excellent(relative to original S^3), the UI was not, however, lag-free. Yes, there were minor lags here and there. Sad eh? I was expecting better. The Menu is really boring, I mean it, I think they should go for a 4x4 or 5x4 layout, or 3x4(or was it 3x3)? I liked the lock-screen though.
The widgets are pretty, I must say, and the notifications panel a minimal, but gets the job done. Task Manager is good.
Basics: Apps took a second to load, almost every app. Browser and Messaging and Calculator, all of em, nothing like the instant Android Fluidness. However, it was still good enough, but after using a Droid RAZR, I was obviously more aware of the speed lag.
The browser is fine, I wish they had ported the N900 browser over already.
Messaging, wow, what a disaster. The qwerty landscape, is TINY what were they thinking. SWYPE was integrated, but I want sms, "short messaging service" I wnt 2 type in shrt, gt it? THe portrait numpad style keyboard is no longer an efficient solution. Again, the buttons are small, sad, for a 3.5" screen. My 5230 with a CFW has better layout.
Camera: Didn't test this out sadly.
6. Galaxy NOTE
Design: HUMOUNGOUS, GINORMOUS, NOT A PHONE GUYS, NOT A PHONE.
UI: More of Sammy's TouchWIZ, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but not that great either. Needs an upliftment.
Blazing fast EVERYTHING, 1.5GHz Sammy POWER!
Basics: Great screen, didn't like typing. Perhaps it was because the screen WAS TOO BIG! Swype helped a "bit"
Camera: Pretty good, for a Hagrid sized phone.
Stylus: I forgot about it, sry
