I assembled the following rig about 1 and half year back:

Intel E8400,
Abit IP35E,
2GB RAM,
8600 GT,
600 W SMPS

Now in the last 1 month or so , my computer hangs up randomly and sometimes I get BSODs as well. More alarmingly during Booting while it is checking "DMI Pool DATA" it randomly throws an error message "Disk Boot failure, System disc not found" and wont boot. If the system does boot then It performs a disk consistency check which proceeds preety smoothly AFAIK.

Currently I am using WD 360 GB HDD. Previously I had a Seagate 250 GB HDD. I faced similar problems with that HDD as well.
Can someone diagnose the problem ?

Most probably the Coolermaster Extreeeme Powa 600W. :P

OP: If that's the case, get the PSU ditched asap and invest in something better.

Why do u assume its the PSU first thing :S Could be a problem with the motherboard, could be a loose contact with the SATA cable, could be a problem with the cable itself! I agree it could be the psu but you need more info before jumping to any conclusions

PS: Did u mean WD 320 gb? Afaik there never was a 360 GB hard disk

There sure was a 360Gb model :)

There was a discussion on it here as well. The common consensus on that was to buy asap :P coz once it dies they prolly wont have another 360 to replace it with.. meaning a confirmed upgrade to a higher capacity model :ohyeah:

Those're all probabilities and this was just another one! :|

In addition, he did mention random hangs and BSODs which could be a probable indication of a faulty PSU. Besides, the CM Extreme Power 600W was once, widely recommended here on TE.

Hey guys,

Thx for your replies. To answer some of your questions:

I have a WD 360 GB model. I had originally planned for a 320 gb since even I didnt know 1 existed before I went to the shop. :P

The SMPS ......lemme try to remember ...... I think it is Typhoon or Zebronics. The shop owner said that 600 W should be more than enough for my rig .

To HUnt3r - Thats a good idea - I will try to change the power connector and SATA cable and see if the problem persists.

eh? Just open your side panel and let us know-Is it typhoon or zebronics (or something else.)

Hey man I am in office right now :P

[ After some :Comp3: ] I think I am using the Typhoon 600W right one.

Yep as you just said, its just a probability. Yet your immediate suggestion was ditch the psu and buy a new one.

Random hangs and BSOD's are not neccesarily a PSU problem, could be many other things. OS issues, motherboard fault, RAM, HDD itself anything. Thats why i said you need more info

Try changing SATA Power/Data cables then check health of HDD in "HD tune" and scan for bad sectors. Now test physical memory for errors in "memtest"

For testing weak SMPS reduce load by detaching extra fans/Dvd drives etc

Why dont you read what was suggested?

Peace! :|

Among the other no cost attempts you make to eliminate suspects, download the WD diagnostics tool and run it.

it sure is the PSU!!
I am facing a similar case in my side

for 2-3 years, i have thinking of every other thing except the PSU {Powersafe PSU 500W L&C(Powersafe-KPL) SMPS(model- LC-B500E)-the Golden One },which was highly recomended @ TE during 2005-2006.

Through these 2-3 years, while i kept finding faults on my pc & its components, & see My 3 Optical Drives(Read DVD writers failing) & HDD dead every year, never did i think of the culprit as the PSU smps

while i kept experiencing my problems, which r detailed here >>> http://www.techenclave.com/pc-peripherals/which-psu-me-facing-many-problems-136328.html#post1135809, even today morning, one of my Perfect condition 250 gb Hitachi drive has caught up with Bad sectors & reallocated.Things has come to such a pass, i cant boot up my machine with anything plugged in except a single HDD!

So i am in urgent buying mode for a GOOD PSU, which can give me peace of mind with everything working in tandem. As i have learnt the Hard way with much costly damages, so i suppose u plz refrain from doing so & geting a GOOD Quality High end Brand PSU ASAP!!!

Mayb this can b useful share of experience which u can surely rely on & as i myself, do look forward with a system without trouble &technology with peace (I mean it,coz i really know)

till then BEST LUCK chum!!!

Hello,
I have similar problem. I have two SATA HDDs. second one 500 GB when I connect to MB, boot up hangs. If I remove the sata cable (still pwr connected). then the system bootsup. Is this a virus? If I connect both, the bootup starts, and just Windows XP logo screen appears with blurred. and stops there...
I have disconnected the second HDD now. But have precious data on it. How to get it? My PSU is a cheap one came with my chasis.
If PSU is the problem, then how to confirm this?
