Well I thought I could sort this on my own but it is beginning to piss me off now.
I have just bought a new hard drive and fitted it into my PC and I'm having a problem. I will leave you the important information so as you can help me if possible.
The jumper settings must be correct because as I turn the PC on it detects all the IDE drives and lists them (my 2 hard drives and DVD drive) this meaning there is power, correct IDE connection and also correct jumper settings.
I go into Device Manager and click Disk Drives and the new hard drive appears in the list.
So I double click the hard drive to bring up it's properties and it clearly states the device is working properly.

However, when I go into My Computer the drive is not there for me to be able to save data onto. It is probably something really stupid but I can't work out why I can't locate my drive and start saving data onto it. Anyone able to help? As soon as possible please because I want to start transfering files onto the new hard drive.

ok,right click on the 'my computer' and go tomanage. Then go to disk management in the left pane.

Now check if any unpartitioned space is being shown.or better, take a screenshot and post it back.

If it is showing space (green in colour) (see the pic below) right click on it and proceed to create a new partition.

Kumar... isnt there a initialisation process to be done to the HDD before the drive can be partitioned and formatted with XP's Disk Management ? I normally make my patitions and run format with the XP install CD as I read somewhere that formatting large HDDs via XP's disk management does not do that great a job. Dunno the why-for's on this but this is sorta stuck in my head so I just do it via the XP CD.

IMO there must be no differance whatever way u do.I prefer to do the partitioning via windows because,u can do other work w/o waiting for the the task to be completed.

As for the initialisation part,i dont think u need any such thing.Just partition>format and u r ready to roll.

About the Initializing of a NEW HDD .. I mentioned it as I have come across this often in the Storagereview forums ... here are 3 threads mentioning this... check the second post in all these threads .... any idea what they are talking about ?

Win XP wont show HDD - Discussion@SR

Cannot boot with SATA drive attached - Discussion@SR

i think they meant initialization = to partition and format.

To me it seemed that "initialization" is a process besides the Partioning and formatting of the HDD..... what these 3 guys have said is...

Then initialize the disk, then partition and format

A quick stop over to the Disk Management snap-in and a wizard popped up. It found a new "Disk 5", and asked if I wanted to initialize it.

"right click" on "my computer" and go to "manage" and in the "disk management" section. is it there?
probably just need to initialize it or format.. ..

I remember reading in a post in Storagereview that this initialization thingy only shows up once when the HDD is first accessed by Disk Management. If the HDD has been partitioned and formatted by any process then this Initialiaze messages will not show up in subsequent partitioning and formatting.

Maybe next time I have a brand NEW HDD I will run it thru Disk Management first and see what the "chakkar" is all about. Something to think about - maybe this did not show up on your HDD because it had already been partitioned by the supplier and subsequently the partitions were erased before you got it in which case you would not see the initailzation message :O Some suppliers here do format the HDD before they sell them as they say they want to check for bad sectors. I have seen one shop doing this.
