Interesting stand-off between HardOCP and FiringSquad with regards to benchmarking. HOCP argues that real world testing is the way to go while jakub at FS sounds off about "real world" testing.

Jakub's Rant: 'Real-world' Benchmarking

The comments that supposedly started it off

Let's just cut to the chase. You will see a lot of gaming benchmarks today that just simply lie to you. That is right, you will see frames per second numbers that are at best total BS, and at their worst a terrible representation of what difference a new Intel Core 2 processor will make in your gaming experience. The old ways of video game benchmarking do little to tell you about exactly how a new CPU will affect how you play your games or what experience your system supplies to you. Having more CPU power is a very cool thing, but being able to utilize it is not an easy thing to do nowadays.

And Kyle's rebuttal

[H] sucks... as simple as that... their reviews are done by braindead buffoons. If they don't see the difference between an X6800 and FX-62 in gaming, what more do they need :P.

I agree real world is important. But some of his points are no good.

I agree that there is probably no need to upgrade from an FX-62 to a C2D, but definitely if you are in the market for new stuff, by all means buy a C2D!

I for one completely agreed with kyle's point of view...

What he stated was that if you are already on a High end AMD dual core platform then you dont need to upgrade your comp if you are a gamer... According to him you wont notice any *improvement* while gaming... While for encoding and all you should upgrade to conroe... he also stated that if you are going in for a new machine go in for a conroe eyes closed...

Now i fail to understand what part of the above statements did he say which wasnt correct... I for one totally agree with him...
