Crap i just told ma bro to get me one 6870, now will spend a little more and will get 6950 hee hee hee hee thanks for the info dude thegame..... :P

So far there is 100% success for every card (HD6950) across various vendors without any problems... techpowerup has a test report as well which proves this... This is really interesting... Now think about Crossfire b/w two HD6950, modded into HD6970... :)

you are welcome mate!!!:):D

Also you can check their forums (techpowerup) or their comments section where you can find the success stories.. AMD Radeon HD 6950 Can be Unlocked to HD 6970 - Page 4 - techPowerUp! Forums

Now a question out of curiosity -- is it possible for AMD to file a legal case against W1zzard of Techpowerup - the one who does the GPUs review and also did this unlocking stuff:huh::huh: as I am sure this will certainly hurt 6970s sales and the 6970s customers might feel that were cheated:@

AMD Radeon HD 6950 to HD 6970 Mod | techPowerUp

I will be getting my hands on a MSI HD 6950 by this week...so stay tuned.....anyone else bought a 6950 on TE ?
All the best Supra :) and do post the results...

Wait... I just went over all the screenshots and the unlocked shaders etc, but it doesn't say anywhere if the 8 Texture Units which differentiate the 6970 from 6950, apart from shaders and clocks are unlocked/enabled as well using this mod? Can anyone confirm this?

I doubt you'd be able to OC the modded 6950 much though since IIRC, the HD6970 and the HD6950 have different memory chips (rated at 6Gbps and 5Gbps respectively) so the vram might be on the edge of stability.

Looks like Santa brought an extra present for us this year. :P

Lesser price, lesser power consumption with same performance level. Win.

Did some searching. Cannot find any correct answer to this.

And what about the difference in power connectors? Isn't it going to matter...

The HD 6970 requires an 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe power connector, while the HD 6950 can get by with two 6-pin PCIe connectors.

^ What I think is the the missing 8-pin connector is going to limit the overclocking ability of modded card by significant level. Not only that, I have doubts about modded 6950 can be padded over 25-30% of PowerTune profile due to the lack of extra power required. I think that is why all the current screenshots show only +20% PowerTune padding of modded card. Also, I think the modded 6950 will be throttled by power when the graphics workload is high... not that it's a very common scenario. Guess that also answers the reason why modded 6590 is using less power compared to 6970. The extra power for 6970 is probably required when the card is pushed over with workload.

Regardless, for people who are not going to overclock this is a kickass mod. It remains to be seen if the future batches will have shaders fused off from the die, instead of current bios-disabled state. In which case, this mod will loose raison d'etre. :)

Dunno why AMD couldn't get this card right.

And there's been speculation that HD6970 is not the complete version of the card and that it too has something locked etc etc etc
