Man takes sledgehammer to faulty PC

After returning a persistently faulty PC to a shop five times over three months, a Wisconsin man snapped and took it apart with a sledgehammer in front of shocked shoppers.

Gary Wilke (aka Mr. Sledgehammer), from Appleton, Wisconsin, bought the $2,600 Gateway PC for his daughter in January. During its short life, the PC had problems both with its hard drive, and its sound system.

After taking the computer to the shop in Appleton for a final time and smashing it to smithereens, the 51-year old bid staff and other customers good day before leaving, according to his own account. Staff at the Gateway Country store tell a different story. Wilke came out with a string of profanities as he pummelled his PC, they say.

In any case, Police from Grand Chute caught up with him and charged him with disorderly conduct

Just yesterday I was told by a local supplier that the Neoteric BENQ service centre had rejected replacement of my 1.5 year old 1640 DVD writer as they said it was out of warranty even though it was mentioned in BIG letters on the box "2 YEARS WARRANTY" .... Neoteric the disti said they never gave a 2 year warranty :@ My answer to my local supplier was "I AM COMING OVER WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER TO SMASH THE WRITER" .... strange I said that yesterday and today I come across this :D

lol..ive felt many times to do same thing in various occasions...but then i control myself & go home & throw the stuff away..:ashamed:

Exactly what I do... no wonder we get treated this way by the hardware suppliers :( ... but .... a Logitech MX500 mouse for which I paid 4500/- got the full 5 STAR Royal treatment from me... the mouses left button was defective from the start and for some personal reasons I could not get it replaced so I caught the rodent by its tail and smashed it with full force on the floor..... felt really NIIIIIICE !!!!! :P

Eazy, I had the same issue with an LG drive that was little over a year old (but box said 2 years) - I finally opted to pay for the service but they sent me a bill of 400 bucks which I refused to pay and told them to keep the drive. Sadly, they don't care about customer satisfaction... that has been my last LG drive, not that it matters to them but I wouldn't recommend LG for this reason.

Thanks for telling me this now.... I bought an LG DVD writer last week  ... but at the price I paid ... 1700/- .... I dont mind using it as a door stop in case it dies even a year later.

^hmmm . . did the bill say the warranty of 2 years? or was it printed on box? ..

AFAIK...by my experience LG optical drives are most durable ones..& samsung & liteon are most crapped out ones..

Do shops ever mention warranty period on the bill ? :O Never got any bill from any shop with warranty period mentioned on it.

I felt doing this twice once with Digicomp as it kept my Asus motherboard for one month & still gave a faulty piece & to my old dealer as he had replaced my old Hynix DDR1 RAM after one month

Thus I never recommend Asus or Hynix

My dad always gets the warranty period written on the bill

^i too..i always insist on the warranty period being written on the bill..& when i do bulk purchases of any stuff..i also make sure the vendor writes 1 month onsite warranty for the product...

Yup....but i guess you get it only when you buy a lot of stuff... but there is no harm in asking the guy

^^ my physique wont be able to handle a sledge hammer :P so i just rip the stuff open to see whats inside :P did that to my old CD writer after it stopped responding .... sledge hammer sounds good though :ohyeah:

BenQ has major major service issues in India.

Actually the drives are so good (atleast during the 1640 days) and the distributors, absolutely pathetic !

I had to convince them for a week that I indeed wanted the 1640, not the 1620. They simply wouldn't sell me the 1640 saying its too expensive, I was life, man I dont mind paying 5k lol, gimme the drive...

I remember THAT time when we were all trying our best to get the 1640 - it was total madness in the forum - everyone wanted the 1640 and there were non available. I remember your posts of frustration when you could not get this writer.... :)

^ Ohh no Eazy it wanst that. The drive was very much in stock with them, but they refused to sell it to me, saying its very expensive and I should go for the 1620 instead

Back in my PII days when I used to come back from skool... all tired and panting with all the hopes of using my comp to soothe myself... there were those days when the drive tray refused to come out... or the comp would just be plain old non responsive... it did get some major thrashing... it was my skool boots against the priya cabinet, guess who won?

Yep Benq did do a sudden U-turn on their 2-yr warranty policy. I remember picking up Benq 1650's for friends last year - dont recall if it had the 2-yr warranty sticker on it - but the dealer repeatedly mentioned that there's been a sudden withdrawal of the 2 yr warranty on it. (atleast unlike in Eazy's case, we were informed of the same before buying it :) )

AFAIK all other manufacturers like LG or Sony have always been stuck with a 1yr warranty. The problem with servicing them (even if it happens to be a minor problem like dust) is the minimum service charges these guys have just to open and look at the thing ends up being almost 1/2 the actual worth of the drive.

If it is written on the pack then those guys should honor it :| Its lame to say that they changed the policy suddenly....or at least they can put a new sticker over the old one

If you have the bill and more importantly the time may be you can sue them...

I buy PowerSafe 400W Gold PSU, dealer give me Pakka Bill but when I ask him about WARRANTY CARD, he said there is 3 yrs WARRANTY and as MOBO/Proccy didn't have WARRANTY card but still with help of Bill and Box you can claim for WARRANTY.

It means Deale didn't TRUST companies on WARRANTY promise as Terms and Conditions KEEP CHANGING from time to time so they simply leave it on Company, mentioning in Bill "WARRANTY AS PER Manufacturers Terms and Conditions"

So in end I can say buy products with Reputed Brand and FROM Reputed Dealer and Keep Away from Brand which do Break Promises.

OT

Real Life Experience:

I bought Electric FAN Regulator from my Dealer for Rs.135/- after 1 yr (have warranty for 6 month) it fails I contact dealer he instantly Replaced with New and Better one with same Brand, on my asking that WARRANTY EXPIRED, he said Reputed company didn't mind (some time) to Replace if product is not Damaged.

Have shoes in 1991 for Rs.300/- after 15 months I noticed Sole Cracked, contact shopkeeper and he ask me to buy any New Pair and he will give me Rs.300/- discount in return of old shoes (Old shoe Warranty 1 yr), I chose Leather Shoes, cost 345, paid only Rs.45/- and return home with New Pair.

How about this Kunhar Warranty experience I had....

I and a friend who is an Englishman settled in India went to Kunhar and bough a SMPS each. His died in 6 months and I went with him to Kunhar and without looking at the SMPS the man behind the counter replaced the SMPS - NO QUESTIONS ASKED - after another 3 months my friends second SMPS died and once again we went to Kunhar and same experience ... no questions asked and across the table replacement ...... then a few weeks later my SMPS died and I went alone to Kunhar and I was asked many questions and was told that the SMPS was going to be sent to Pune for repairs and I would get it back after about a month - it took 6 weeks. Moral of the story is that you have to take a white skinned friend to Kunhar if you want immediate replacements :@

Here is the ad of Kunhar from that time - see what I have marked in RED ... SHOCKING !!! Do you think they will still honour this warranty commitment on my 6 year old SMPS ?
