my card idles@ 50 and hits 80 on load

case? power supply? fans? ambience? which drivers? Which board, processor, etc?

You need to be a psychic to solve your problem if you are going to put vague queries. Its your system that is getting hot, so don't you think you should mention the relevant info? :)

it may be the problem with the AMD reference cooler......if its a xfx one it will be having such issues....my powercolor 4870 idles at 47-50c and hits 63 max at load.................

power supply - cooler master 600 w

drivers - latest drivers

fans - 2 cabin fans and one processor fan

board - intel dg31pr

processor - core 2 duo e 7300

my processor temp is normal - around 45 degree idle

4870 sapphire brand . whole pc is getting hot ... PLease help

Extreme series? Change it! Why? You can do a manual search on the forums itself to answer that question. Can't change it? You system, your money, your risk, your wish :)

Out of curiosity, from the site right?

What fans? 120mm? What case? If its one of those small cases with useless fans that barely push much air then you will need better fans. Do some cable management and clear the cable mess around the system using cable ties!

Also out of curiosity, did you stuff your case inside a furniture enclosure with absolutely no way of air flowing properly?

Help can only be given if relevant information is given. Do the needful and post back.

if possible, place the side panel fan such that it blows air directly on to the card....or just get a HAF 922, that will fix all your heat problems :P

I have a crappy cabin bought about a year back . and i have 2 120 mm fans . I have placed my pc in an airy place (Even with cabinet opened on one side). The drivers for ATI 4870 were downloaded from the official web site.

My cpu fans are poor and so is my cabinet . But unfortunately i have low money with me ... Is cabinet so important for cpu cooling and are the fans equally important. And by changing these will the temperature of GPU come down . And I am doomed since i bought a cooler master 600 w

it cudnt be a problem with airflow, coz even the idle temp is higher than the load temps of other 4870 with same cooler. It might be assembly defect, like improper contact of cooler, temp sensor reporting bad, faulty heat pipes, improper apllying if TIM at time of assembly etc.

Can u just touch the pipe on sides while at idle and load, and see if its really hot? coz in case of faylty sensing, the pipe shud be cool.

if its manufacturing defect, u can mail Sapphire and ask for a replacement.

btw, whats ur load temps on furmark burning ?

Don't recommend stress testing, especially with such psu with such colourful reputation :P.

@ Karthikus: How did you conclude your entire pc is getting hot? Which software did you use to check the temps? Screenshot will be helpful.

At times like this, you are better off removing the entire config from the case and use it till you can afford a decent case. I already cautioned you about the psu so there's no point talking about it.

The pipe s hot and in fur mark burning my temps are 85 degree minimum and 98 degree maximum

do one thing before you switch off your pc next time..

open gpuz for gpu temperatures and hwmonitor for other temperatures and voltages... keep them active on screen..

now hibernate instead of shutting down..

do this when you would be keeping your pc off for a while..

so that components get enough time to cool and come down to room temperature.. (preferably at the end of the day for the whole night)

next day when you start the pc, take a screen shot as soon as you u get to the desktop..

screen shot should have hwmonitor and gpuz(Sensors page) as active windows.

this will conclude the boot up temperatures..

(this will make it clear if the issue is with improper heatsink mounting...)

from then onwards.. keep monitoring the temperature for 10-15minutes... see the change.. Now wait for the temperatures to reach the idles values which you are getting now... report us the time it roughly took to reach that..

(this will conclude how much heat buildup your case and airflow is responsible for..)

in the meantime, take some pictures of your setup to let us know how they have been setup... people can then direct you toward better management and effective locations for those 120mm fans to dissipate heat out of the cabinet.

I'm running a Sapphire HD 4870 with non reference cooler which runs on idle at max 46 and on load at max 60...If you haven't done already, change the fan speed to atleast 55%..If you still have a problem, it may be your case blocking all the air, try cleaning your cabby do some cable management....Then check out......

i doubt if this wud work, as it takes only a fraction of a second for the temps to jump 10~20c and come down too. Moreover if its improper contact, then it heats up even more quickly, and it wud the its usual 70c idle just after resuming from hibernation.

This is most probably the card's issue. crappy cabby airflow wont make a rise of 40c afaik. Moreover he is now using without the sidepanel, so it hardly makes any difference [maybe some 4~5c]. Most of us with same card with same cooler has load temps < 60c and urs is 98c... no doubt the card is the culprit.

in GPUZ, what are the memory temps? improper GPU contact shudnt affect memory chip temps, but as the GPU heats up the cooler pretty well, it cant cool memory chips effectively as well.

try an RMA.
